#02: Gakuen Alice (Natsume & Mikan)

After hearing a knock on his door, Akira went to open it and was surprised to find that it was Natsume.

"Can we talk?"

Akira nodded and let him in. After they sat down in the living room, Natsume started, "I'll just get to the point."

Akira stayed silent, and Natsume continued, "I know about Mikan's condition, and I'd like to replace her in her missions."

"You must know that missions are not like a day in the playgrounds, Hyuuga."

When Natsume kept a straight face, he sighed. "I'll help you with the training then."

Natsume nodded. "I'd appreciate that."

Curious, Akira asked him, "Why the sudden interest?"

"Just tell me when we will start the training," Natsume replied before walking out of Akira's room.

So you care about Mikan, huh? Akira thought, but truthfully, he did not expect Hyuuga to come to him. I guess I can let you take care of Mikan, Hyuuga…

"Aki-kun, are you hiding something from me?" Mikan asked while analysing the document she was holding.

"Eh?" Akira said, confused. "What are you talking about, Mi-chan?"

"Don't you think it's strange? Usually, I'll have three missions for a week, but now, I only get one."

" …"

"You're hiding something from me." She stared at him intently. "Just tell me, Aki-kun, what happened?"

"I don't have any idea on what you are talking about, Mi-chan," he evaded and walked towards the door. "Oh yeah, are you hungry? I'll buy something for you."

"Please don't change the subject, Aki-kun," she said seriously, stopping him from leaving.

Akira sighed in defeat. "Okay, okay, but please don't get angry…" He turned around and gazed at her. "He replaced you last month. It really surprised me when he came to me and asked whether he can replace you. In a week, he mastered everything."

"He?" she asked and started laughing doubtfully after a few minutes. "Did you mean Natsume by 'he'?"

She hoped that Akira would say that it wasn't him, but the guilty look on his face said otherwise.

"I'm sorry, Mi-chan. I didn't mean to hide this from you, but we just want you to take a rest," Akira confessed.

I really can't believe that baka, she thought before leaving the room, fuming slightly.

From the corner of his eyes, Natsume could see Mikan, who walked towards him. She stopped next to him and sat down.

Neither spoke a word for a couple of minutes.

"Why?"

With her arrival alone, he already knew that she was talking about the mission. "…"

"Why did you do that?" she asked again.

"…"

She sighed.

He could tell that she was getting impatient because of the silence.

"Why did you do that, Natsume?" she asked for the third time.

"Do I need to answer that question?"

"Would I ask you if I don't want to know your answer?" Mikan snapped with a vein popping out of her head. When he remained silent, she huffed. "Fine! Don't tell me then! I can't believe that I even wasted my time asking you." She started to get up to leave.

Unfortunately for her, he grabbed her hand and made her sit down again. He could tell that she was ready to yell at him again. Before that happened, however, he explained, "I know your fiancé is here, but you don't want him to help you so I decided to help you instead of him."

How did he..? She hummed. He must have known about it when I talked to Akira at the Northern Forest… "I didn't know that you have a habit of eavesdropping, Natsume."

"Whatever," he said and opened his manga again. When he felt she was getting nearer, he looked at her, and something unexpected happened: their lips locked.

His eyes widened, and she pulled away.

"Arigatou." She smiled and left him dumbfounded.

Even if it was only a peck, he still could feel her soft lips against his. So this is your way to say thanks to me, huh? He smirked and continued reading his manga.

I really can't believe this... I kissed him! It was supposed to be on his cheek, but he just had to turn and... Oh well... still... that was my first kiss… She flushed red while grinning like an idiot.

"Mi-chan?" called Akira, snapping her out of the wandering mind.

She looked at him, acting nothing was wrong. "Yes?"

Akira had a silly grin on his face. "Did something happen?"

She really hated it when he made that kind of face. "Nothing."

"It's good to see you smile, Mi-chan," Akira commented while looking at her.

Before resuming her work, she gazed at him with a small smile. "Arigatou, Aki-kun."

From that day onwards, Mikan and Natsume were getting closer each day. They even made everyone think that they were going out until…

"Mikan-chan, can you come with me to the office now?" Narumi-sensei said with a serious expression on his face.

"Yes, Sensei," replied Mikan before following him. Once they were outside of the classroom, she asked, "What is it, Sensei?"

"Yukihira-sama just arrived here a minute ago and asked me to call you immediately."

Otou-san? Did something happen? she thought worriedly while making her way to the office. When they arrived at the office, Narumi-sensei left her with her father.

"Otou-san."

Her father looked at her. "Mikan, I need you to come with me to America."

"Eh?" She was confused. "Why so sudden? What about school?"

"Akira will take your place for the time being."

"Why?"

Her father sighed. "We have found a trace of AAO's leader in America."

That one statement was enough for her to not question her father. She, too, wanted to end the fight between Alice Academy and AAO. After a short contemplation, she asked, "When will we depart?"

"Tonight."

To be honest, she had been expecting that answer. "I understand, Otou-san."

With that said, she left to find Natsume. Though she was upset that she had to leave so suddenly, it was necessary. As usual, Natsume was reading his manga under the sakura tree. He only glanced at her when she sat down beside him. After a moment of silence, she spoke, "Natsume..."

"Hn."

"I'm leaving for America tonight."

"..."

"I'm not sure when I'll be back, but I'll try my best to return as soon as possible."

He closed his manga and gazed at her. "Anything else?"

"You're not going to miss me, are you?"

"Hn."

She looked away, feeling somewhat disappointed. Suddenly, she heard him chuckle and looked back at him, confused. When she saw the mirth in his eyes, she scowled at him. "That was not funny, Natsume."

He only smirked in reply. After that, they stayed silent, watching the swaying branches of the surrounding trees.

"What am I to you, Natsume?" she asked quietly, breaking the silence between them.

He gave a light shrug. "What do you think?"

"Best friend?"

He neither agreed nor disagreed with her suggestion. Yet, his answer was clear when he gave her a red pouch. Inside, she found a silver necklace with a diamond shaped crimson stone. Taking out the necklace, she offered it to him, wordlessly asking him to help her put it on. He complied with her request silently. Smiling at him, she grasped the red stone, which was obviously his Alice stone. "Thank you."

Not wanting to be outdone by him, she, too, handed him a necklace with her Nullification Alice stone, which was also in a diamond shaped as well. "Coincidence, huh?"

"Hn." He let her put it on him. Once she was done, he gently grabbed her nape and pressed his lips against hers, giving her an unforgettable passionate kiss. It had never crossed his mind that she was taken when she returned his kiss eagerly. What he knew was that he wanted to enjoy this last moment with her. No matter how long it would be, he would wait for her return.
