#01: Gakuen Alice (Natsume & Mikan)
...xXx...
...xXx...
"Okaa-san," Mikan called out into the darkness. Suddenly, at a corner she saw an unconscious woman lying helplessly on the floor. She was lying down on her front, her face turned sideways, her tousled auburn hair was over her face… and that memory dissolved into the darkness. Black was all she could see now.
"Okaa-san," she cried out as a stream of tears flowed down her cheek. She saw her mother in her brother's arms, being carried, and Akira, her brother together with her ran into the dark woods.
Her brother swivelled round and looked at her. "Mikan, we need to head back now."
His voice was distant although he was just standing a few feet away from her. The memory dissolved again into the darkness, as fast as how it had appeared, it dissolved in a flash, too.
"Okaa-san," she called out weakly, her voice echoed in the darkness. Her brother still had her mother in his arms. She wanted to reach out to her, she tried to reach her, she wanted to touch her face, but she couldn't. She felt so numb. She saw her right hand held out to her although she couldn't feel that she was actually doing it. Just a little more, those unnecessary distance shortened, before she could touch her face… and suddenly, everything began to spin. Her head was spinning in agony. Darkness stirred along as her head throbbed painfully. And before she knew it, she had fallen behind.
Mikan’s eyes snapped open and she sat up. She froze at once, thinking she was dead. Her eyes could only see a white backdrop. The wall was white, the bed which she was sitting on was white, the floor had white mosaic, and her gown was… green? She felt bewildered. Hospital? She chuckled quietly as she took another good look at the room again. A smile touched her lips when she saw her little brother and her best friend sleeping beside her.
"You-chan… Hotaru," she whispered gladly as she caressed their fingers. She felt a hand on her right hand, and her head shot to her right. Akira was there, sleeping, too, as he had his hand on hers. His grip tightened unconsciously as she heard him mumbled something. She looked at his fine features. His sleeping face made him even more handsome.
"Mmmm…" Akira mumbled again. His eyes fluttered a little, and he stirred in his seat. Slowly, he looked up at Mikan. "Mi-chan! Thank goodness. How—"
"Onee-chan!" Youichi screamed and jumped into her embrace. Akira's voice was too loud, and he had woken both Youichi and Hotaru. Youichi dug his head into her chest, clinging at her tightly.
Mikan hugged him back. "I'm sorry, You-chan."
"You don't have to apologise, Mikan. It's not your fault, not Akira's, too," Hotaru said impassively. Her violet eyes were on Mikan but her hand held out her Baka Gun and had it aimed at the terrified Akira. Clearly, she was blaming him…
"Yes, yes, it's my fault. I'm sorry Ru-chan, You-chan," Akira apologised, laughing nervously after that, but his eyes were alertly fixed on the gun.
Mikan shook her head. "No, it's not Aki-kun's fault. By the way, how is Okaa-san?"
Everyone looked at Akira.
"Yuka-ba-san is alright, it's just…" Akira’s voice trailed as his eyes dropped to the white mosaic of the room.
"It's just? What happened to her? I need to see her now. Where is she?" Mikan started panicking.
BAKA! BAKA! BAKA!
"Calm down, will you?" Hotaru grunted as she blew the tip of her Baka Gun nozzle.
Mikan rubbed her head in vain. Her eyes were stinging with tears threatening to come. Not because of the pain from the gun though. She was worried for her mother. "I'm sorry."
"Yuka-ba-san is not in a critical condition. We just don't know when she will wake up. She was wounded badly by AAO," Akira explained quietly.
"She's in the other room, you can visit her later," Hotaru added emotionlessly.
Mikan nodded, understood. "How about Aoi-chan?"
Hotaru and Akira looked at each other.
'How long do I need to wait?' Natsume was frustrated. Waiting for his little sister was really tiring… and frustrating. He couldn't wait any longer. He wanted to see her now! Then, a knock was heard. Slightly irritated, he called out, "What?"
The door clicked open. His crimson eyes darted to the door, and he saw Imai Hotaru came in… along with a familiar face beside her.
"Nii-chan!" Aoi screamed, and before Natsume knew it, she was in his arms. He was stunned from the moment he saw her little face staring at him at the doorway. It felt like a dream. If it really was, he wished not to wake up. He really wanted to see his little sister. He missed her a lot. But, he knew this was not a dream. He hugged her tightly. "Aoi."
Hotaru had decided to leave them alone as he saw her gathering speed towards the door again.
When she grabbed the silver knob of the door, Natsume spoke, "Imai, who—"
"Mikan. She's in the hospital, and Akira is with her now," she informed him before closing the door behind her.
Natsume was taken back. 'Hospital? Did she get hurt?'
He wondered if she was alright. After all, he owed her for saving his sister. Then, he heard his little sister call him.
"Mikan-nee is alright. Can I visit her tomorrow?" Her crimson doe eyes were staring at him hopefully.
He let out a small smile. "Of course."
"Aoi is with Hyuuga now." Hotaru stated the obvious.
Mikan sighed in relief. "Thank goodness." Aoi must be happy to be with her brother now.
"I'll call my brother. He told me to call him once you're awake," Hotaru added and disappeared behind the door.
A few minutes later, a knock was heard.
Mikan swiftly put her mask on before calling out, "Come in."
The door opened and revealed Aoi, who ran towards her. "Mikan-nee!"
Mikan smiled and returned the hug from the young girl. "Aoi-chan."
"Are you alright, Nee-chan?" Aoi asked worriedly, looking at Mikan.
Mikan gave her another smile. "I'm alright. Thank you, Aoi-chan."
Natsume… Mikan noted when she saw the raven-haired boy standing behind her cousin.
Right after that, the door was opened again. It was Narumi-sensei, Hotaru and her brother Subaru.
"Ah! Looks like Mikan-chan is having a lot of visitors," Narumi-sensei said and approached the brunette. "Are you alright, Mikan-chan?"
"I'm alright, sensei." Mikan smiled pleasingly. It had never occurred to her that she no longer hid her emotions.
"Mikan-sama, just a minute," Subaru said suddenly and held out his hand. After a moment, his hand glowed white, and he started checking her with Healing Alice.
"Everything's okay. You'll be fine by this evening," Subaru said impassively.
Smiling, Mikan replied, "Thank you, Subaru-nii-san, and please, just call me Mikan."
Subaru sighed before nodding. "Take care, Mikan."
Mikan nodded in reply and watched him leave the room.
"Aoi-chan, let's go and get your things. You'll be starting school today," Narumi-sensei said kindly as he knelt and looked at the little girl.
"Really?" Aoi squeaked eagerly.
He nodded. "Yes. Let's go, Aoi-chan."
Aoi waved at her brother. "See you, Nii-chan."
With that, both of them left the room.
"We’ve got to go, too, Mikan. Lessons are still on," Hotaru bid emotionlessly and left the room.
"Arigatou, Hotaru."
Youichi planted a peck on her cheek. "See you, Onee-chan."
Mikan returned his gesture. "Be a good boy. I'll see you later, okay?"
The boy nodded in reply.
After the silver-haired boy left, Akira kissed Mikan's cheek. "See you after class then."
Mikan smiled. "See you, Aki-kun."
Damn! Why must I witness her being kissed by that Azumi, Natsume thought annoyingly. He then realised that he was left alone with Mikan. He felt a rush of blissfulness fly into his soul, not that he would show it on his face.
What is Natsume doing here? Why is he here when he's not going to talk to me? Mikan pondered and began, "Nat—"
"Arigatou," he muttered quietly without looking at her.
Perplexed, she choked out, "Eh?"
"Aoi," he muttered quietly.
"Oh. Don't worry about. It's not a problem. You don't have to thank me." Mikan smiled shyly. Compliments always made her big-headed.
"No, I have to," he said almost too quickly.
Mikan began again, "Well, like I said, you don't have to thank—"
Eh? Mikan stunned, her eyes dilated in shock, her brain froze, and she was baffled. Her lips was caught in his, he was kissing her tenderly with his eyes shut as though he was cherishing this very moment…
Natsume felt her lips part a little, perhaps she was trying to protest, but he wouldn't let her go. He held her tight as he deepened his kiss, locking her in his arms. He wanted her to kiss him back. Then, he slipped his tongue into hers, forcing her to do the same, to kiss him.
What is Natsume doing to me? Why is he kissing me? She asked herself, panicked. She was already out of breath. Her heart was beating so fast. She could feel the butterflies in her stomach… She was aware of the weird fluttering in her heart, too. The feeling was alien to her. Unconsciously, she wrapped her arms around his neck and started to kiss him back.
They tried to fight their breath, losing it as they kissed. It never felt so sweet before, his lips, her scent, his strong grasp, her soft hair… The kiss lasted for minutes before they parted, breathless.
We… kissed, Natsume thought in disbelief. His stoic face didn't show it, though. He touched his lips. The taste of her lips still lingered.
Mikan touched her lips, too, disbelief was written across her face. She batted her eyelashes slowly and dreamily as though she was trying to wake up from the dream… but obviously, she wasn't dreaming. She turned to look at him.
Their eyes met, and as quickly as they had caught each other’s attention, they looked away quickly, too, blushing.
"Um, sorry," he muttered and swiftly left her.
"Eh?" Mikan was confused. Why was he apologising?
Unknown to them, Akira was watching them, witnessing the two kissing. He rubbed his temple, slightly annoyed. While walking back to the classroom, he made a mental note to talk to Natsume.
"Okaa-san," she cried out as a stream of tears flowed down her cheek. She saw her mother in her brother's arms, being carried, and Akira, her brother together with her ran into the dark woods.
