#02: Gakuen Alice (Natsume & Mikan)

Yuka looked at Izumi, her husband, worriedly. "Are you sure about this?"
"I am. Please tell her about this, Yuka," he replied, never lifting his head to look at his wife as he looked over the documents in his hands.

"But, I don't want—"

Finally, he looked up. "Please."

"All right, I will tell her." Yuka sighed before leaving for her only daughter's room. When she reached there, her daughter seemed to be busy reviewing her own work, work that should have been done by her father. To tell the truth, she didn't like to see her daughter suffer like this. Her young daughter should be out there, playing and having fun with friends, but unfortunately, her child chose to spend her time helping her father instead.

"Dear, I need to tell you something," Yuka began carefully while looking at her daughter closely.

Mikan stopped doing her work and looked at her mother. "I understand, Okaa-san."

You heard what your father told me? Yuka asked mentally.

I heard everything, Okaa-san.

"I'm sorry," Yuka apologised and hugged her.

"It's alright, Okaa-san," she muttered, returning the hug.

"Then, you need to prepare for tonight's dinner now." Yuka smiled at Mikan, who immediately nodded. "Yeah, I know."

Natsume glared at his mother. "I don't agree with this. Who wants to—"

"Just bear with it, Sume-chan," his mother Kaoru interrupted, and a vein popped out of his forehead.

"Please, Okaa-san, don't call me with that name. I'm already 15 years old," he growled.

"Oh, you still look like a little boy to me."

He chose to ignore his mother's comment. "Tell that old man that I don't agree with this. Period!" he said and walked away from his mother but…

"Don't talk to your mother like that."

Both looked at his father who walked into the room with a deep frown on his face. "You have no say about the matter. Like it or not, you will attend the dinner tonight. Is that clear, Natsume?"

"Anata…" Kaoru mumbled.

Natsume clenched his fists. "Father, I'm not—"

"No more discussions. Prepare yourself."

With that said, the older man left the room.

Damn! Natsume cursed inwardly before sitting down angrily on his bed.

Kaoru rubbed Natsume's back. "Just bear with it, Natsume. Your father only thinks about what is best for you. You should get ready for the dinner."

What will I do now? Natsume thought after watching his mother leave his room. He then took his phone and called Ruka.

When Ruka answered his phone, he began, "I need your help."

"Natsume? What's wrong?"

"You look lovely, Young Mistress." Rin complimented her young mistress.

Mikan checked herself in the mirror. Her red, silk, v-neck dress that reached her knees had a big stem of black rose design on her left waist. She wore a simple silver necklace and chose to forgo earrings. Pleased with what she saw, she nodded at the house maid. "Thank you, Rin, and please just call me Mikan."

Rin shifted uncomfortably. "Master Yukihira will be upset if I do that, Young Mistress." She still remembered the time when she did that and got scolded for hours because of it.

"Just do it when no one's around, ne?" Mikan compromised with a smile.

"As you wish, Young—Mi-Mikan," Rin answered, unsure whether she did the right thing to give in to her young mistress's request.

Right after that, Yuka came into the room. With a smile, she commented, "You look beautiful, my dear."

"Okaa-san!" Mikan smiled and hugged her mother. Grinning, she said, "Did you forget that I get my looks from you, Okaa-san?"

Yuka shook her head slightly. "Enough of that, we have to go now. Your father is already waiting for us."

Together, they left the house for the special dinner.

"It's really good to see you again, Izumi," Mr. Hyuuga greeted while holding out a hand.

Izumi smiled and took his hand, shaking it. "Yes, it's been a long time since the last time we met, my friend."

"Here is my daughter, Mikan," Izumi introduced as he presented his daughter to his best friend.

Mikan bowed towards his father's best friend politely. "Nice to meet you, Hyuuga-san."

Mr. Hyuuga nodded with approval. "Likewise, my dear." He then turned to Izumi. "I'm sorry, but Natsume will join us later."

Izumi smiled. "It's okay. Young people always have a lot of things to do."

She's like a princess, Youichi admired inwardly.

"Here is my younger son, Youichi," Mr. Hyuuga said, introducing his second son.

"Nice to meet you, Mikan-nee," Youichi greeted Mikan politely while their parents started their own conversation. Natsume-nii, where are you?

"Please excuse me, I would like to go to the rest room," Mikan said with a polite smile as she excused herself after an hour.

What a boring conversation, Mikan thought while walking to the rest room. Accidentally, she heard a conversation from a couple that just passed by.

"Don't touch me after you meet my parents, I paid you to pretend to be my girlfriend. Got it?" the boy said.

"Just leave everything to me, Natsume-kun," replied the girl cheerfully.

Natsume? Mikan gazed at the boy.

Natsume, who was still looking around for his parents, didn't notice he was being watched.

This might be interesting, Mikan thought again and made herself invisible with a barrier before walking back to where their parents were.

"Father," Natsume called, and everyone stopped his or her conversation and looked at Natsume.

Mr. Hyuuga looked shocked and angry after a few moments.

"Natsume, what are you doing? Who is she?" Kaoru asked with a displeased expression on her face.

Youichi looked at his older brother in disbelief.

Sumire chose this moment to introduce herself, "My name is Sumire Shouda, Natsume-kun's girlfriend."

Out of all people, why did you choose her? Youichi thought as he didn't like Sumire, not one bit.

"Your son has a girlfriend," Izumi concluded lightly. "Well, I guess this can't be done then, my friend."

"No. You know that we already made this promise, and I don't want to break it," Mr. Hyuuga insisted and glared at his son. "Natsume, you will—"

"Now, now, calm down," Izumi said, interrupted his best friend. He turned to Natsume. "You can go now, Son."

Natsume walked away from them. "Whatever."

"You! Come back here, Natsume!"

Natsume ignored his father and left immediately.

Once again, Izumi tried to prevent his best friend from going after his son.

After a few minutes, Yuka said, "Dear, you don't have to hide anymore."

Everyone was confused and gasped when Mikan suddenly appeared beside Yuka.

Youichi shook his head in disappointed manner. You really will regret this, Natsume-nii…

Kaoru, who started panicking, began, "Mikan-chan, Natsume—"

"I believe it will be best to cancel the engagement, Oba-san." Mikan smiled. I refuse to be engaged to someone like him!

Nooo… I want you to be my onee-chan! I don't like that Sumire girl. She is ugly… and she's kind of smelly… Youichi screamed inside his mind.

After reading Youichi's mind, Yuka smiled. After they see my daughter, everyone will surely like her…

Yuka began, "Hmm… How about we do it like this, Natsume and Mikan will still be engaged but only known by us."

Horrified, Mikan stared at her mother with wide eyes. Okaa-san!

Yuka ignored her daughter's stare. "I believe that Natsume and Youichi will join Alice Academy next month?" After receiving nods of confirmation, she continued, "When they do, we will let him know about Mikan first. And, of course, we can't let him know that he and Mikan are engaged."

Mikan's face turned pale.

Yuka turned to Youichi. "And please don't tell your brother about this, You-chan."

Youichi nodded eagerly. "Don't worry, I won't tell a word to Natsume-nii about this." Great! Mikan-nee will still be my future onee-chan!

"Oh, I'm really sorry about this, Yuka. As for your suggestion, I don't have a problem about it," Kaoru said and glanced at her husband who also nodded in agreement.

"It's settled then." Izumi smiled and grabbed a bottle of wine to celebrate the occasion.

Why did it turn out like this? Mikan asked herself, clearly dismayed.

"Mikan-nee, please take care of me starting next month." Youichi smiled as cutely as possible.

You-chan is really cute, unlike his arrogant brother Natsume, Mikan thought and smiled. "I will, You-chan."

Youichi hugged her. "Arigatou, Mikan-nee." It's really great to have Mikan as my onee-chan.

Mikan sighed inwardly. Starting next month, it will be a long day for me…
