#01: Gakuen Alice (Natsume & Mikan)

Natsume turned the tap on hastily, and he cupped his hands together to take in as much water he could. He bent down, nearer to the sink and splashed the cool water on his face over and over again. He breathed heavily, hoping that the dream he had just now would disappear together with the water dripping down his chin, but to his annoyance, the dream remained.
How many times must that dream haunt me? he thought exasperatedly. He couldn't bear to dream that nightmare every night — the very same dream he had since the day Mikan disappeared. He massaged his aching forehead. He couldn't believe that she could slip away from his hands so quietly that even his sharp instinct couldn't detect her leaving. He slammed his fist in frustration. Where have you gone to, Mikan? He sighed miserably with his head hung low. For now, he could only wait for her to return. Once she returned, he would never let her leave his side again.
"Good morning, Class!" he sang happily, not aware that his cheery voice annoyed his students.
"Morning," the class echoed dully. They were still upset of Mikan's sudden disappearance.
"Class, Christmas is just around the corner," Narumi-sensei announced and clapped his hand happily, but he then lose his enthusiasm when the class didn't respond to him. He sighed in disappointment. "The Christmas ball will be held a week from now. Please choose which team you want to join."
"Christmas ball… if only Mikan-chan could join us." Anna sighed, downcast.
The girl beside her turned to her. "Cheer up, Anna. Although we don't know where Mikan-chan is right now, I think she's okay."
Anna smiled in reply. "Arigatou, Nonoko."
Mikan-chan, everyone really misses you. Narumi-sensei smiled upon the thought. He stared at his students with his shimmering purple eyes. Before leaving the classroom, he cleared his throat. "Decide your group and there would be a meeting at two for all of you children. Adieu!"
The class was getting noisier as they were all searching for partners.
"Hotaru-chan, do you want to join us?" Anna asked as she approached the inventor.
"Sorry, but I have been assigned to do something else."
"Oh. What is it?" the group asked in unison and stared at her curiously.
"You'll see soon enough," the Ice Queen said before walking out of the classroom in haste.
"Hotaru-chan!" her friends called out, pouting but Hotaru ignored them.
I have to get everything ready for her, everyone, Hotaru mused pleasingly to herself.
Hotaru entered her room when Amanatsu, her first creation she made in her stay in Gakuen Alice, approached her. "There is a letter for you, Hotaru-sama."
She took the offered letter and examined it. Light pink in colour and Sakura prints on the right side of the envelope. A small smile carved on her face. "Mikan…"
Hotaru-chan,
It's been a while. I'll be visiting Gakuen Alice of Japan for the Christmas ball.
I can't wait to see you!

Mikan couldn't believe that she really made it before the Christmas ball. Although it was only a one-week visit, it was better than nothing. She sighed in relief as she closed the door behind her.
"Onee-chan!" Her younger brother Youichi ran and threw his special big hug, which she missed so much. "Welcome back, Onee-chan."
She hugged him back. "I'm back, You-chan. For now, I guess."
He pouted, and she tapped his small nose. "What's with that gloomy look?"
"Why can't you stay, Onee-chan?"
Tilting her head, she smiled gently at her brother. "There's still work need to be done, You-chan. I can promise you that I won't leave again when I come back next, okay?"
"Pinky promise?" He gazed at her pleadingly.
She grinned and held out her pinky to link with his. "Pinky promise!"
Her mother, Yuka, who saw the adorable scene, smiled and welcomed her daughter with a warm hug.
"Onee-chan, where's Nii-chan?" Youichi asked as he stared at her with his adorable eyes.
Mikan smiled. "He's resting in his room, You-chan."
"Ah, Mikan-chan! Don't forget that you have to sing for the Christmas ball." Narumi-sensei, who he appeared before the door, said with a wink.
Mikan really didn't like the idea that she was going to sing in front of the school. She didn't even think she could sing. Hesitantly, she asked, "Narumi-sensei, do I really have to sing?"
"Of course, Mikan-chan! Everyone's waiting for you, you know. Moreover, you're an important guest. Just for this once, okay?"
Mikan knew she couldn't back off from this event. Though, she really wanted to be left alone with her brothers and Hotaru.
"Onee-chan, what song you will sing for the Christmas ball?"
Mikan paused. She hadn't thought of that yet. "Would you help me choose a song?"
"You know, you can sing any song you like. You're very talented," Yuka complimented with a smile.
Heat crept upon Mikan's face. She bet her face was glowing crimson by now.
"I love your voice, Onee-chan," Youichi chirped, adding the blush on her already red face.
She whined with a pout. "Why must I sing? Can't others do it?"
"Because you were born with a good voice," a violet-eyed girl said as she entered the room and approached them.
"Hotaru!" Mikan cried happily and hugged her best friend. But, before she could hug her…
BAKA! BAKA! BAKA!
"You left me here with that stupid promise. Do you know how guilty I am for not telling that Hyuuga where you went to?" Hotaru snapped impassively and blew the nozzle of her Baka Gun.
Mikan pouted and sat up straight. The blow she received from her best friend's Baka Gun caused her fell on her back. "I'm sorry, Hotaru-chan."
Mikan knew it was wrong for not telling Natsume about her departure. She wondered if he was alright. After a while, she saw a hand held above her head and she looked up. It was Hotaru, who smiled at her.
"I missed you, Baka," she whispered.
Mikan's eyes began to water and hugged her tightly. "I missed you, too."
As they parted, Hotaru started, "So, Narumi-sensei told me that you're going to sing in Christmas ball."
Mikan shrugged. "Yes, being an important guest and all."
"I want you to sing this song." Hotaru trusted a long piece of paper in her hands.
Mikan took a look and gasped uneasily. She squirmed a little in discomfort and began, "Umm… Hotaru… This song is…"
"I know, you will sing that song with a partner." Hotaru stated nonchalantly.
Mikan looked at Hotaru and saw a smirk on her face. She went rigid at once. She already has something in mind!
"I haven't talked to him, Hotaru-chan," Narumi sensei piped up.
Mikan turned to Narumi-sensei. Him?
"Leave it all to me, Sensei," Hotaru said as she began to walk out of the room.
All they could do was to watch her. She was definitely a professional blackmailer. No one could and would reject her requests when they were threatened by her. Just before she reached the door, she twirled and faced them again. She held up her finger as she spoke, "The costume. I'll do that, too."
Her violet eyes turned to Mikan. "You'll start practising the song tomorrow."
Mikan nodded and began, "About—"
"For now, you will have to practice alone," Hotaru said as if she had read her mind.
"Thank you, Hotaru. By the way, you haven't told me about Ruka-pyon." Mikan grinned. She knew her best friend and Ruka would be together one day.
"Nothing important, he's just my slave and idiotic boyfriend," Hotaru answered dully as she waved a hand upon the matter.
Mikan's jaw fell open. She was offended in behalf of Ruka. How could she say that Ruka was her slave…? Not to mention idiotic boyfriend… She shook her head disbelievingly.
"Where are you going?" Hotaru asked when she saw Mikan leaving the room.
"My room." No one tried to stop her. Before closing the door, she bid, "See you tomorrow, everyone."
Mikan entered her room, scowling upon the thought that she had to clean up her room after the long absent in the school. To her surprise, her room was sparkling clean. She guessed Hotaru had been maintaining her room condition as she could smell the familiar scent of her room in hers. She smiled appreciatively and took off her mask. Then, she dug her pockets and took out four different coloured stones and her face fell at once.
"Aki-kun…" she muttered sadly.
Akira approached her with a big smile was on his face.
Mikan gave her favourite cousin a smile in reply.
They just got engaged not so long ago.
"Mi-chan, I want you to have this…" Akira said shyly as he held out his hand.
Mikan looked at his hand and saw four Alice stones. She was pleased, but then miserable in chagrin. She began with a sigh, "Aki-kun, we made a promise that we will call this engagement off when we found the one we truly love."
"I think it would be better if you give it to that person. I'm not worthy," she muttered quietly, downcast and pushed the stone away.
"Mi-chan, please take it, don't think I'm giving you this because you're my fiancée. I want you to have this as a promise that I'll protect you," Akira told her solemnly.
Mikan gasped and stared at him. She felt touched upon his words, causing her to blush so deeply. Tearing her eyes from his gaze, she had to admit that he did have dazzling eyes.
"A-alright…" she stammered quietly and took the stones. They were beautiful.
"Arigatou, Aki-kun," she gushed and gave a peck on his cheek. She quickly skipped away toward her room to keep the stones.
Mikan jumped to her bed and hugged her pillow. Tears streamed down her cheek as she sobbed silently in her room.
"Why must you leave me? Didn't you promise me that you would never leave me and protect me?" she wept silently, with those four stones in her hands.
"I missed you, Aki-kun. I hope you're doing well in heaven," she cried till she fell into the land of dreams…

Mikan's all right and she has come back. Her heart still yearns for Aki-kun, and it's so sweet how she remembers him. Truly the guy is real important to her, but knowing how strong Mikan is I'm sure she'll move on. And it's true that Mikan is very talented and has a lovely voice (She's voiced by Kana Ueda after all!) and I can't wait for her performance with a certain someone.
