#05: Gakuen Alice (Natsume & Mikan)

"Good morning, Class," Narumi-sensei greeted with a smile on his face.

The class excitedly replied him, "Good morning."

"Well, seeing as all of you are so excited, I'm sure you all know what I'm going to say. The masquerade ball will be held next week. Starting from today, all of you will have free period until the ball."

The class cheered and started talking to each other.

Narumi-sensei turned to Yuu. "Yuu-kun, you will have a meeting with other class representatives today."

Yuu nodded. "Understood, Narumi-sensei."

Narumi-sensei looked at Natsume. "You, too, will have to attend the meeting, Natsume-kun."

"Tch," Natsume rasped. Who wants to attend that stupid meeting?

In the end, he attended the meeting, and surprisingly, he was the first one who arrived at the meeting room. Sitting on one of the chairs, he took out his manga and read it. After a few pages, Mikan joined him. He only glanced at her once and continued his reading again. She's finally here.

Mikan sat on her own chair and started reading one of the books she bought with her.

Silence engulfed both of them. The only thing that could be heard was the sound of flipping pages once in a few minutes. But, the beautiful silence was interrupted by Akira, someone who stepped into the room.

The brown-haired boy immediately approached Mikan and whispered into her ear, "Got you."

Just like yesterday, Mikan glanced up at him before continued reading again.

Natsume watched their moves secretly while reading his manga.

Akira sat beside Mikan. "Have you had a partner for the ball, Mikan?"

"You know the answer, Akira."

Looks like she doesn't have a partner, Natsume guessed mentally.

"Well, you were the Class B representative, and one of the student principals since we were elementary. You’ve never, not even once, attended that ball."

No one's interested in a nerd like her, Natsume replied to him mentally.

Mikan gazed at Akira. "Time is gold, Akira. I'd rather use that for reading my programming books instead of attending that ball."

Natsume laughed mentally. You just don't want to admit that no one asked you to be their partner.

Before Akira could object again, the other class representatives and student principals joined them.

Much to Natsume's surprise and disbelief, every guy was asking her to become their partner for the ball, and of course, she rejected them with "I'm sorry, I'm busy on that day."

Unknown to him, even though she may be number one nerd in the academy, but she was popular. She was a genius and awarded by the government of Japan because of her own research about technology.

Looks like she's hard to get… she's really an interesting girl, Natsume noted to himself.

The meeting went on without problems and finished by the afternoon. Soon, everyone started to make their way out of the room.

Natsume usually went to his sakura tree around this time, but now, he felt like going back to his room. When he was walking back to his room, he realised someone was trailing behind him. That person was none other than Mikan Sakura. She had been following him since they went out of the meeting room. Of course, he was secretly happy for being followed by the girl, who was becoming his favourite. Once they reached the dormitories, she still followed him and also went to the fourth floor that was for special star students only. He stopped his tracks right in front of his room, and before he flattered himself too much, a realisation struck him. Don't tell me she is…

He guessed it right. The girl that was following him from the beginning opened the door next to his room and closed it once she went inside. He immediately choked when he read the plate on the door that was carved with MIKAN SAKURA. He went into his own room as he thought in disbelief. She is my neighbour!

Leaning against the door, Mikan switched the light on.

In a count of seconds, a voice greeted her, "Welcome back, Mikan-sama."

"I'm back, Ren," Mikan greeted back as she loosened her pigtails and took off her thick glasses.

A beautiful face appeared on the screen of her computer. "Mikan-sama, do you wish to have a dinner or a bath first?"

"A bath first," Mikan said and her bath tub was automatically filled with water and bubbles. After stripping her clothes, she immediately went to the bathroom.

"Mikan-sama, what would you like for your dinner?" Ren asked again.

Mikan pursed her lips. "Anything is fine with me, Ren."

After finishing her bath, she went to the dining room and had her dinner that was prepared by Ren. She made a program that allowed Ren, her computer assistant, to prepare anything she liked to eat with her own recipes. After finishing her dinner, the dishes were immediately cleaned up by one of her inventions. While walking to her library, she asked, "Are there any news for me?"

"Yes, there is a new message from your assistant at 3:45 PM. Would you like me to read it for you, Mikan-sama?"

Mikan started reading the book she liked while saying, "Sure."

"The content of the message… Mikan-sama, my deepest apologies for disturbing you, but there is a problem with one of your customers Mr. Road. He insisted to meet you personally to talk about the price of the invention you introduced two days ago at America. Right now, he is waiting for your answer. Once again, I truly apologise for wasting your time. End of message."

Mikan closed her book with a sigh. "Ren, connect me to my assistant."

"Right away," Ren replied, and seconds later, another voice answered, "Good evening, Mikan-sama."

Mikan closed her eyes. "Good evening, Richard. Connect me to the customer." She waited less than five minutes.

"Good evening, Ms. Sakura," Mr. Road said.

"Good evening, Mr. Road."

"I would like to meet you personally to discuss the price of your invention."

"Sure, just tell Richard the time and place you wish for the meeting. Have a nice day, Mr. Road."

"Have a nice day, Ms. Sakura," Mr. Road replied happily.

With that, the conversation was ended. She let out a tired sigh. "I'm so tired..."

"Your bed is already prepared, Mikan-sama," Ren informed after hearing what her creator said.

"Thank you, Ren. I guess I need some sleep now." Mikan climbed to her bed and immediately closed her eyes while muttering, "Good night, Ren."

"Good night, Mikan-sama," Ren replied and every light went off instantly.

Natsume had a sleepless night because he couldn't help but think about his favourite girl, who was sleeping next door to him. He woke up early and after finishing his bath, he heard a beautiful song. He went to his balcony and realised the one who sang the song was Mikan. He closed his eyes as he enjoyed the song. You have a beautiful voice, Mikan. He came back to reality when the song ended. He went to his room again and had his breakfast. Once he was done, he walked out from his room and found Mikan was leaving as well. There was no greeting between them, he watched Mikan walk away while hugging a few books. His crimson eyes were filled with interest.

"Well, you were the Class B representative and one of the student principals since we were elementary. You never attended that ball once."

His crimson eyes were filled with interest. Maybe I should ask her...

Mind made up, he decided to go to Central Town and started looking for a gown for his favourite girl. An hour of searching later, he decided to buy a light pink gown that had no fabric on the back and shoulders complete with a matching pink mask that had sakura designs on its the right side. After buying the gown, he went back to his room and placed a small note on the top of the package.

Another day has finished, Mikan sighed and touched the light switch of her room.

As usual, Ren greeted her, "Welcome, Mikan-sama."

"I'm back, Ren. I would like to take a rest first, so please prepare my bath later."

"As you wish, Mikan-sama."

After taking off her disguise, she threw herself on the bed. Her long brown hair trailed down to the bed side. When she was about to close her eyes, she saw something on her balcony. She closed her eyes. "Ren, please check who's entered my balcony today."

"Right away, Mikan-sama."

After a few seconds, the screen of her computer showed a picture together with the details. Too tired to get up from her bed, she asked, "Who is it?"

"Natsume Hyuuga from Class A. His codename is Black Cat."

"Black Cat, huh?" she muttered before closing her eyes. "There's a package on the balcony, please get it for me now."

Within seconds, another invention of hers appeared from the floor of her balcony. After scanning the surroundings, the invention picked the package and brought it to Mikan.

Mikan took the package. "Thank you, Ren."

"You're welcome, Mikan-sama."

She read the small note on top of the package.
Tangerine,

Please wear this gown at the masquerade ball.

Raven, huh? She opened the package and stared at the gown before taking it out from the package. Smiling, she mentally commented, Not bad…
