Life

#23: Gakuen Alice (Natsume & Mikan)
...xXx...
She has a son.
She has a good career.
She is satisfied with her life.
"I'm back!" she said after she opened the front door of her small house. Light footsteps were heard, and her 15-year-old son appeared before her once she finished changing her shoes.
"Welcome back, Okaa-san," he replied as he gave his mother a gentle smile and took his mother's heavy bag. His mother was working for an IT company as assistant manager. The bag she carries everyday consisted of none other than her notebook. He always encouraged his mother to get a new, lighter notebook, but his mother always refused, saying that the notebook was her lucky charm.
Mikan sighed in relief as she sat down on her favorite cushion that was placed on the tatami floor. She smiled gratefully at her son Ryusuki Yukihira, who offered a glass of water. As expected from her son, he sat behind her and massaged her shoulders gently to ease her tired muscles. She sighed in content.
"How's your day, Okaa-san?" he asked his mother, still massaging her shoulders.
"Busy as always," she replied and took her son's hands, stopping him. After that, her son sat beside her.
She cupped his face. "What about your school? Is everything okay?"
Ryusuki smiled and nodded his head. Mikan smiled back.
After that she stood up from her seat and walked to the kitchen as she asked, "So, what would you like for dinner?"
"I thought you should be the one that decides today's dinner, Okaa-san," Ryusuki replied as he followed his mother to help her. The word of help was not really applied to him as their dinner was made by both of them or they helped each other. He knew how tired she was after her working hours ended. He loves his mother, but…

...xXx...
He has a son.
He has a good career.
He is satisfied with his life.
"Welcome back, Natsume-sama," Rin, one of his trusted maids greeted him.
He nodded in reply.
"Where's Ryusuke?" he asked while he made his way to the living room. Even though he knew where his son is, he never stopped asking about his only son.
"Ryusuke-sama is in his room since he got back from school, Natsume-sama," Rin reported while looking into her master's emotionless face. How she wished to tell her master the truth, but she couldn't do that. Even though she had worked in this mansion since she was a little girl, she couldn't tell her master about his son's feeling. She had no right.
"Dinner will be ready shortly if you wish, Natsume-sama," Rin continued.
Natsume nodded his head and made his way to his son's room. After a few moments of walking, he finally reached his son's room. He knocked on his door, indicating his son that he was coming in. He opened the door and found his son at his desk.
Ryusuke looked up from his book and a smile crossed his face, but his face turned emotionless again as he got his father's silent message through his narrowed eyes. His father never tolerated his cheerful self. He never understood why he should act like his stiff, emotionless and cold father. Even though he had been raised with great discipline, he sometimes slipped away from his supposed demeanor. He loves his father, but…

...xXx...
How does it feel to have a father? To tell the truth, it never crossed his mind before until his weird dream. He thought he was seeing a mirror, but he was not. They did have the same height, the same hair style, the same hair colour, the same eye colour, but they didn't have the same attire. Logically, if you see a mirror then it should appear the same as you but what he saw was not. The dream continued for three days, and finally, his curiosity couldn't hold any longer.
"Who are you?" he asked his 'twin.'
"Ryusuke…" he told him. It surprised him, of course.
"What about you?" Ryusuke asked.
He blinked his eyes before replying, "Ryusuki."
After their introduction, they started exchanging stories about their school through the dream. When it came to family, he found Ryusuke flinching and telling him that he wished not to talk about his family but he wanted to know about his instead. Apparently, Ryusuke was vice versa of him. He has a father, but he doesn't have mother. It sounded crazy, but it was the truth. They met every night and knew each other more. Looking at Ryusuke always reminded him of his mother as his cheerful self was just like his mother's.
Two days was good enough.
That was what he thought, but he was wrong. The idea was from Ryusuke as he wished to see his mother. Since they looked exactly the same, he agreed to take his place for two days. The memory was still vivid when he arrived at the Ryusuke's mansion, or his father's to be exact, for the first time.
"Welcome back, Ryusuke-sama. Your father is waiting for you in his study." He was greeted by Rin, one of Ryusuke's father's trusted maids. Ryusuke told him about her. He gave her a nod before making his way to the study. He knew the structure of the mansion from Ryusuke. After he reached the study, he gave a knock. A deep voice replied his knock. Taking a silent, deep breath, he opened the door, and he was immediately greeted with the man's eyes. Looking into the man's eyes, he finally understood why Ryusuke never wanted to talk about his father.
"Good evening, Otou-sama," he greeted emotionlessly. His heart skip a beat as the word of "Otou-sama" rolled out from his mouth. It was a good feeling to say the least. For years he wished to have a father. He never had the guts to ask his mother about his father, so he would use this opportunity to make his dream come true even though it would be just for two days.
Ryusuke's father looked at him as if he knew that he was not Ryusuke. After staring at each other for a good minute, he looked away from him.
"I have left a few documents for you to look through. It's time for you to learn about business." His cold voice reached his ears.
Two days felt like two months. He missed his mother and wished to meet her soon. How wrong he was when Ryusuke suddenly told him that he wished for another day to be with his mother. Living in a cold mansion was not easy. Even though he wished to have a quiet place, he never dreamed to live in the mansion without his mother.

...xXx...
Ryusuke was curious about Ryusuki's mother. Even though Ryusuki didn't talk much about her as he remembered his family condition, he knew his mother was a kind mother. Out of the blue an idea came to him, and he was sure it would work perfectly. He proposed to have them switch places. He thought two days would be enough for him to know Ryusuki's mother. At first Ryusuki didn't agree as he was afraid that they would be found out. After a few more reassurances, Ryusuki finally agreed. They met secretly, and it just felt natural to see him in flesh. After promising to meet again in two days, they separated.
Two days was not good enough.
That was what he thought. He was green with envy when he finally met Ryusuki's mother. At first, he always thought how small their house was, but after meeting his mother he had come to the conclusion that no matter where they lived, they would be happy. The warmth she provided was enough to make him forget about his tough life.
"I'm back!" His heart skipped a beat as he heard the woman's voice for the first time.
"Okaa-san…" he whispered to himself. He had always dreamed about having a mother. He didn't know that Ryusuke's mother already stood before him until her warm hand touched his forehead.
"Are you alright, son?" Her gentle voice touched his heart immediately. He had never experienced something like this. Unable to hold his happiness, he hugged the woman. His body felt warm as she patted his back and asked him if he was alright. He tightened his hold as he quietly told her that he was alright. He was glad that he could meet Ryusuki's mother. He would enjoy every second he spent with his mother.
His plan worked just fine. Ryusuki's mother didn't know that they had switched places. His heart yearned for more. He wished to stay longer with his mother. He loves his father, but when it came to Ryusuki's mother, he couldn't deny his need for her presence. She was just like what he imagined as his own mother.

...xXx...
Mikan blinked her eyes several times before putting away her reading glasses. She closed her eyes, leaned on her chair and massaged her temples. The headache was coming and torturing her inside out. She knew the reason why she had this headache. She was worried sick about her son.
"Ryusuki…" she muttered to herself. Looking at the phone that lay innocently on her desk for several minutes, she sighed. She pulled out a name card she had kept for sixteen years. It had never crossed her mind that she would talk to him again. Gathering her courage, she dialed the number.
The office was silent like usual. His eyes scanned through the document he was holding. After a moment or two he would sign the document and start again with the other documents. He came to a stop when he heard a soft sound coming from his intercom.
"What is it?" His voice was cold as he answered it.
"Natsume-sama, a woman named Mikan Yukihira insists that she speaks with you. She's on line 2."
He narrowed his eyes. He had not heard that name for the last sixteen years. Without giving an answer he pressed the number.
"Do you require something, Yukihira-san?" he started. His voice surprisingly softened.
"I wish I could get your mansion's phone number."
"I thought—"
"I remember the agreement, Hyuuga-san. I want to have my son back."
"What do you mean?" he asked even though he knew what she was talking about.
"You can pretend you didn't notice it, but as a mother I know my son is with you, so don't try to fool me."
"What are you implying?" He was annoyed. How could this woman think of him like that? He would not do such a thing as to fool her.
"Seeing how you refuse to tell me your mansion's phone number, we shall meet again tomorrow. Please take my son with you so we can settle everything."
Before he could protest, she hung up. He growled as the woman dared to give him an order. But then, it was because of her fierce personality that he decided to choose her to bear him a son or an heir to ensure his bloodline. He had no desire to have a wife, so he decided to look for a surrogate mother that would agree to bear him a son without attachment.
After a few considerations, he had chosen three out of twenty names and met them one by one. After the second meeting he almost gave up on the thought. Nothing was wrong with the first two women; he just felt they were not the one he was looking for. Looking around the small restaurant, he somehow understood why the third woman wanted to meet here. The atmosphere was good, and it was not crowded. As a chime of a small bell was heard, he looked up to the front door, and his eyes met a brown-haired woman. He unconsciously took a deep breath as he realized how beautiful she was. He kept his eyes on her as she went to the counter and talked to the waitress quietly. After a moment she turned around, and surprisingly she walked towards him.
"Natsume Hyuuga?" Her gentle voice made him shudder.
He stood up and offered his hand, but she bowed at him instead. He knew instantly that the woman before him still held the Japanese tradition. He replied her with a small bow and gestured for her to sit. A waitress approached them, and they ordered their meal. After that, they only looked at each other without saying anything.
"As you know, my name is Mikan Yukihira," she started after their meal was served.
He nodded as he let her continue.
"I refuse to have your money if you happen to choose me as the surrogate mother for your son, but I need a favour in return," she said while looking at him.
"What is that, Yukihira-san?" he asked, slightly curious of what she would ask of him. To be honest, he loved her straight-forwardness. Unlike the first two women he had met, they only think of how much money he could offer to them. The woman before him was different and deep down in his heart, he had chosen her. He knew that she was the one he was looking for.
"I wish to have a child, too. It doesn't matter if it's a girl," she stated simply.
With that said their agreement was sealed.
He wished to stay longer with her, but apparently, they only needed one night to produce twin sons. It surprised him, of course, even though he knew it was not only one attempt to achieve that. He supported her during her pregnancy even though it was part of the agreement. After she gave birth, he was asked to choose one of them to complete their agreement. At first, he was unable to choose between the two as his sons were identical twins. He felt that it won't matter which one until he saw one of them smile. The smile reminded him of her. Before leaving with his newborn son, he heard her name her son "Ryusuki." That was how he has named his son "Ryusuke."

...xXx...
Ryusuki had no idea why Ryusuke's father suddenly asked him to come with him. They went to a small restaurant and were led to a vacant table. They sat down but didn't order anything. He then figured out that they're going to meet someone. Not long after that, he heard the chime of the bell. He didn't bother to look who was coming until he saw the man's eyes. The coldness in his crimson eyes disappeared and was replaced with longing eyes. He blinked and decided to look at what he was looking at. He gasped in horror as he saw Ryusuke with his mother.
Ryusuke never thought something like this would happen. He didn't expect to meet his father so soon. He only spent four days with Ryusuki's mother. He wished he could spend more time with her, but it looked like fate was against him. He refrained himself from running away from the restaurant. He was sure that he would meet his father's angry eyes, but he was wrong. His father didn't give any indication that he was upset. That was unusual, and he wondered why.
Unknown to him, Ryusuki was also having the same thought.
They sat across each other, and a waitress approached them and took note of their order. They remained silent until the waitress returned with their orders.
"It's been sixteen years," Mikan said, startling the twin boys.
"Hn," Natsume grunted a reply and earned curious glances from his sons.
"How's your business, Hyuuga-san?" she asked as she stared at his crimson eyes.
"Good. What about you, Yukihira-san?" he replied, staring at her, too. After that they conversed quietly.
Ryusuke was shocked. He never knew his father's voice could be this casual. He had always known his father's cold voice. One big question formed in his head though. The more he heard their conversation, the more he was convinced that his father knows Ryusuki's mother. To what extent he was not sure even though he had a hunch about it.
"Okaa-san," Ryusuki spoke, and everyone turned to him.
"How have you been, Ryusuki? I hope your father treated you right." Mikan smiled at her son.
Shock was evident on the twins' faces. How couldn't they be? If she was telling them the truth, then they are truly twins, and everything was not a pure coincidence as they thought it had been.
Ryusuki looked at Natsume whose eyes softened as he spoke to his mother, "What are you trying to say?"
Mikan chuckled slightly. "Isn't it obvious? It's about your cold demeanor."
"I thought you knew me better than that," Natsume replied almost playfully and shook his head.
"How?" Ryusuke asked in a whisper, but they heard him. Unfortunately, no one answered him. He looked at the woman that was known as his mother.
Mikan felt her other son's eyes on her. She sighed mentally and finished her lunch. After she put back the glass, she looked at Natsume. "What's his name?"
"Ryusuke," Natsume said. Mikan looked at him curiously as she noticed the similarity to her son's name.
Mikan shook her head and turned to Ryusuke. "I'll let your father explain everything."
She stood up and turned to Ryusuki. "It's time to go back."
Ryusuki obeyed as he stood up, too, and walked to her side.
"It's nice to see you again, Hyuuga-san." Mikan gave him a smile and left. But before she could do that, Ryusuke caught her wrist. She turned around and gasped silently as she saw his second son's eyes. It hurt for her, too, to leave him, but she had no choice. She had an agreement with her son's father. For one last time she cupped his face and leaned down to kiss his forehead lovingly.
"I'm happy to have known you, Ryusuke. No matter what happens, you are my son," she said. She leaned closer to his ear and whispered, "Take care of your father."
Ryusuke didn't know whether he should happy, angry or sad. He was happy because Ryusuki was actually his twin which meant that Mikan was his real mother. He was angry because his father never said anything about his mother or his twin brother even though he never asked him. He was sad because he couldn't stay with his mother. He sighed loudly and closed his eyes before lying down on his bed. He needed to find a way, a way to stay with his mother.
Ryusuki was happy that he could finally be back with his mother, but then, he couldn't help but think about his twin. He remembered his twin's face when he stopped his mother. He had the tendency to adapt very quickly in every possible situation, so he was only a little shocked when he found out that Ryusuke's father was actually his real father. His unspoken desire was granted: to know who his father is. After he saw how his mother interacts with his father, he wished he could do something for her.

...xXx...
Soft tapping was heard within the room. The sound stopped as the owner of the fingers leaned back in his comfortable chair. He clutched his fist tightly and then stood up from his seat. He approached the glass window and stared at the horizon. For the umpteenth time, he sighed. He hadn't been able to concentrate this whole day as his mind kept wandering to a certain brunette.
"Mikan…" he murmured to himself. It was a lie that he felt nothing about her after their meeting a week ago. He wished he could have another day with her.
Meanwhile...
As Ryusuke saw his mother walk out from the office building, he hesitantly called, "Okaa-san…"
His mother did hear him as she turned to him. He wanted to approach her and hug her, but he was afraid that she would reject him.
Looking at the hesitation on Ryusuke's face, Mikan gave him a reassuring smile and opened her arms. He got her message and without hesitation, hugged her.
"I missed you, Okaa-san," Ryusuke said softly.
Mikan hugged him a bit tighter before replying him, "I missed you, too, Ryusuke."
As they broke the hug, Ryusuke was about to say something, but he was stopped by Mikan. "Do you want to go home with Okaa-san?"
Ryusuke smiled brightly and nodded. Mikan smiled back, and then they went back together. As usual Ryusuki greeted his mother like nothing had happened after he saw his twin. They went to the living room, and Ryusuki served some relaxing tea for them. It should have been Mikan's job but Ryusuki insisted that she should rest after her long hours of working. After settling down Ryusuke looked at his twin critically before turning to their mother.
"Okaa-san…" Ryusuke began, and Mikan hummed in response.
"Can I… can I stay for a night or two?" Ryusuke asked, looking nervous.
Mikan put down her tea cup and asked, "What about your father? Did you tell him?"
Ryusuke quickly nodded his head. "Of course, I did, but Otou-sama said I shouldn't bother you, Okaa-san…"
His last words sounded like a whisper, but since the room was small, everyone could hear him clearly.
Mikan looked at Ryusuke in surprise. "Nonsense. You wouldn't bother me at all. I did tell you that no matter what happens, you will always be my son. It's just that your father and I have agreed that we wouldn't have any contact after the agreement was fulfilled."
Ryusuke almost grinned triumphantly but refrained himself as the plan might be discovered by his mother if he did. The first step was successfully executed, so he wouldn't risk spoiling it. He just needed to continue their plan so that everything would be falling into the right place. Oh, yeah, it was his and his twin's plan. To be honest, he was excited and couldn't wait to see the result of their plan. As strange as it might be, he and his twin still could meet in their dreams. It was as though their souls were calling for each other as they had the same desire. With that knowledge they had used their time to form a good plan for their father and mother.

...xXx...
Mikan knocked on Ryusuki's room before calling, "Ryu, breakfast's ready."
She received a reply from Ryusuke instead of Ryusuki. "Right away, Okaa-san."
She shook her head and walked back to her small kitchen. After she placed everything on the table, the twin boys appeared.
"Good morning, Okaa-san," the twins greeted their mother.
Mikan smiled. "Good morning."
Looking at their formal attire for the weekend, she asked, "Planning to go somewhere?"
"Yes," Ryusuke replied enthusiastically, but after a moment, he frowned. "I'm sorry, Okaa-san."
Mikan hummed. After she slowly sipped her hot green tea, she said, "If it's about leaving Okaa-san alone, it's okay."
Ryusuki looked at his mother expectantly and then asked, "Are you sure, Okaa-san? You could come with us if you wish so."
Mikan smiled and shook her head. "Both of you rarely spend time together as twins so, Okaa-san wouldn't take that away from both of you."
"Okaa-san," Ryusuki scowled. Even though leaving his mother alone was part of their plan, he didn't want to make his mother think that she was in the way.
Mikan chuckled lightly. "I know what you mean, Ryusuki. Really, it's okay. Okaa-san is still a bit tired, too, and wishes to have a good rest, so both of you shouldn't worry too much about it."
Since they didn't want to argue with their mother, they obeyed her even though it was originally part of their plan.
A few minutes later after the twins left, Mikan started cleaning the house as usual. Even though usually Ryusuki would help her, she didn't mind doing it alone.

...xXx...
Natsume stared at the door of the small house before him. He sighed silently before stepping forward and pressing the doorbell. A short reply was heard from the house. His heart beat faster in recognition of her voice. The door slowly opened for him, and as expected, it was she who opened the door.
She looked at him without any indication of surprise and said, "Come in."
He walked inside the house. He looked around the small house as she spoke again, "Is green tea alright with you, Hyuuga-san?"
He grunted a reply and followed her to the living room. He realised her house was one-fourth the size of his mansion, but seeing there were only two people living in the house, he knew it was big enough for them.
While putting the tea cup, she spoke, "I hope the twins didn't give you any trouble, Hyuuga-san."
"I'm surprised that you knew their little plan, Yukihira-san." He smirked smugly.
"They're my children," she said as she poured the tea to each cup.
"They're our children," he corrected quietly.
Surprised, she looked up at him. She wasn't disappointed as he did look at her with gentle eyes. She broke their eye contact. "I can't disagree with you."
Silence engulfed the room.
"I missed you," they said at the same time.
Both were surprised and looked at each other before laughing together.
She shook her head in disbelief. Still smiling, she spoke, "I guess it was not a one-sided feeling then."
"Hn," he grunted then stood up. He walked to the small shelf behind her. He reached out the frame of her picture with little Ryusuki. He guessed it was when Ryusuki was seven years old. He had something similar at home, but of course, it was more formal than this picture. His lips tugged upward when he saw her happy smile.
Too occupied with the picture, he didn't realise that she was standing beside him until she spoke, "You can take it if you want."
He put the frame back and turned to her. "I wish to take something else."
It seemed like she got his hidden message as she looked away from him.
He caught her wrist before she could walk away from him. "Mikan…"
She took a deep breath as she heard her name. She remained still with her back to him. He stepped closer and slowly wrapped his arms around her waist from behind. Both closed their eyes as their bodies pressed against each other. They were content. Knowing she wouldn't resist him, he moved closer to her and leaned his head down to her neck. He inhaled deeply before pressing his lips to her slender neck. After giving light kisses on her neck, he went up to her ear and whispered something.
She snapped her eyes open, stepped away from him and turned around to look at him.
"Marry me…" His words echoed in her mind as she stared at him to make sure she wasn't dreaming or imagining things.
"I know that part of the agreements was there will be no contact after you gave me a son," he began, knowing what she was thinking about his proposal.
"I won't mind if you want to make it as a new agreement between us," he said while looking at her almost pleadingly. He almost thought she rejected him as she did not give any response after a few minutes. But then, her smile assured him that he was not.
She hugged him. "I don't need a new agreement, Natsume…"

...xXx...
They have sons.
They have good careers.
They are satisfied with their life.
"Welcome back, Natsume." His wife's voice reached his ears as he walked into his mansion.
He gazed at her lovingly as her warm smile washed away his annoyance for the day. He leaned down and kissed her temple. "I'm back, Mikan."
Love has never been spoken between them. Even so, they were both believed that they love each other enough to be together, and they were contented with that alone.
It has been six months after their wedding ceremony, but he felt like it was just yesterday. After going through a lot of disagreements, Mikan has finally given up and agreed to live with him, but then, her house won't be sold as time to time they might be able to use it again. She was still working at the same company, but now, she has her own chauffer that would take her to and from work. She has protested a lot about it even until now. But then, it was for the safety of her and their unborn child. Yes. They're going to have another child coming, a daughter to be precise.
To be honest, he didn't expect that possibility. She was in her late thirties and it was dangerous to have a child around her age. It was impossible for them to kill the child, too, so they kept it. Moreover, Mikan had always wanted a daughter. Everyone was thrilled by it, especially his twin sons as they would have a little sister to spoil. He, too, was happy as this time, he would be able to watch his daughter grow up along with his wife. He had always imagined having a family with her, and and it was thanks to his twin sons that he could achieve that. He has given a new life, and he would treasure that. He would treasure his wonderful life.
The End
Thanks for reading.

  23. I really enjoyed thus story. The concept is different from what I am used to finding on FanFiction. It has enough information without giving too much, there is a maturity about it. The flow of time is nice and overall I think it is well written. Thank You.

  24. 8D Haha, Natsume and his ways of stealing the name his loved one gave. He just wanted to find her again.

And they do say that twins have this special connection, so those dreams wouldn't seem too odd. :D

Adorable Their reunion. :D Great work!

  30. All's well that ends well. You know, that's a lie, right? I'm talking about the brother's spoiling her. They'd tease her to death before spoiling her, lol. I should know even if I have two elder sisters.

    Anywho...

I really liked how this story went and for a second I thought it was going to be something similar to "Parent Trap". But I was proven wrong as the story progressed. . Lovely ending to a lovely story.

And I was definitely intrigued with the summary while stalking your account... XD

Though I'm a bit confused with the twins age. They are 16.? And yet they act 7-ish and still look the exactly the same.. hahahaha.. XD

    WOW.. XD

Oh well.. It was still a nice one-shot though. Touchy.. Very very touchy.. XD
