Involuntary Third Wheel

#30: Gakuen Alice (Natsume & Mikan)
...xXx...
One time was okay.
Three times was tolerable.
But, five times was definitely not okay.
Why me? Mikan kept asking herself whenever her cousin Hotaru-san, who was four years older than her, dragged her along on her date. She always asked herself what was so special about her to make Hotaru-san choose her when they had a bunch of other cousins. More importantly, she didn't volunteer to become a third wheel for goodness' sake! She didn't have a boyfriend, but that didn't mean it had to be her. The craziest thing was that Hotaru-san even offered her a sum of money in return for going with her. She truly felt like crying.
"Mikan."
Mikan turned to the only person that was with her at the moment. "Yes, Natsume-san?"
"You're still in your first year of high school."
She blinked as she didn't expect Hotaru-san's boyfriend to ask her anything. Since their first introduction, they rarely spoke even though Hotaru-san always tried to make them converse. If she didn't know any better, she would think Hotaru-san was trying to hook her up with her boyfriend. She nodded. "Yes."
"Alice High School."
"Yep," she replied, giving him another nod.
An awkward silence suddenly settled between them.
She cleared her throat before timidly asked him, "I heard from Hotaru-san that you're working for a big company."
When he blew out the smoke of his cigarette, she tried her hardest to stay still. Yes, Natsume-san was a heavy smoker. It was still a wonder to her as to why Hotaru-san could stand being with him for hours.
"Hn."
She didn't have a clue about how to continue the conversation, but luckily for her, Hotaru-san was back from wherever she was.

...xXx...
"W-will you please say that again?" Mikan asked her cousin with disbelief written all over her face.
"Seduce him," Hotaru repeated nonchalantly.
Mikan quickly placed the back of her palm on Hotaru's forehead. "You're not sick."
Hotaru refrained herself from rolling her eyes. "Of course, I'm not sick!"
Mikan rubbed her chin and thoughtfully mumbled to herself, "If you're not sick then… you must have hit your head somewhere…"
"Mikan!"
Shocked, she darted her eyes back to her cousin. "What?"
Hotaru let out a low sigh. "Please…"
Mikan was speechless as her cousin never said 'Please' to anyone. "Hotaru-san… I… I don't understand why you would suddenly ask me to… to seduce Natsume-san. I mean—"
"I'm getting married."
Mikan's eyes widened. "W-what?"
Hotaru looked away from her cousin. "It's an arranged marriage, Mikan. You must have heard that my father's company has money issues."
"I will ask—"
"No. You can't. My father will definitely refuse, and you know that."
Mikan didn't know what to do. It wasn't that she hated Natsume-san, but she didn't particularly like him either. Her first crush was when she was still in middle school, and it ended horribly. Moreover, her father wanted her to remain focused on her studies since Alice High School was one of the best private schools in their province. She didn't want to disappoint her father by going against his request. Though she was sure her father wouldn't say a word if she could divide her time wisely. She sighed. "Why me, Hotaru-san?"
"I choose you because you're the only one I can trust." And he seemed to like you.
"He's a man, so I'm sure he will be fine by himself. And one more thing, I don't love him."
"You don't love him yet."
Mikan knew that her cousin was being persistent and would force her to say yes. She sighed in defeat. "Alright, but I can't promise you that it will work." I'm only 16 years old for crying out loud!

...xXx...
"Make eye contact whenever you talk to him."
Hotaru-san's words echoed in her mind. She really wanted to run away from this madness. Talking to him was not a problem, but while maintaining eye contact would be impossible! Hotaru-san had made an appointment with Natsume-san, and she would be the one to be present for the appointment.
"Natsume-san." Mikan gave a small bow in greeting.
Natsume returned the greeting by giving her a small nod.
She shifted uncomfortably when he studied her. "A-ano… Natsume-san… Hotaru-san couldn't—"
"She planned this, didn't she?"
She had the urge to cringe in fear when she felt the coldness of his voice. Hearing him sigh, she looked up at him.
"You should go home. I know she must have forced you to do this."
She didn't know how to answer his statement without hurting him. He must feel worse than her since it was his girlfriend who did this to him. Still, she tried, "Natsume-san… Please don't think badly of Hotaru-san. She… She really loves you, and… I know that she's trying to make you happy… and…"
She sighed in defeat. "I'm sorry… You're Hotaru-san's boyfriend, so you must have known this better than me…" I said too much.
"Shall we go then?"
"Eh?"
He gave no answer and walked away from her.
Not knowing what to do, she just followed him to his car. Apparently, Natsume-san didn't want her effort to come to be wasted, so they went to a café restaurant to have lunch together. It was just lunch, and he would drive her back afterwards.
When Natsume-san excused himself to answer a phone call from his company, she met him, her first crush. The idea of meeting him after moving to this city was absolutely absurd. Well, she knew they would meet again, but she didn't think it would be here.
"It's been a while, Kazuma-senpai," she greeted, trying her best not to blush.
"When someone told me that you had moved to this city, I couldn't believe it, but now I do."
She froze when she heard his next words. "Are you trying to run away from me since I rejected you?"
Suddenly, a girl who was around her age hugged Kazuma's arm. "Darling, what are you doing here? I thought I asked you to wait for me."
"I'm sorry. I just wanted to say hi to my little kouhai." He smirked at the girl.
The girl turned to Mikan. "Heh? It's so nice of you to greet your kouhai. She must be really special."
"Kind of. She was crazy over me when we were still in middle school."
"For real?"
Mikan clutched her summer dress tightly. Kazuma was humiliating her.
"Yeah. She should have known that—"
"Do you have any business with my girlfriend?"
They all turned to Natsume, who was emitting a spine-chilling aura.
Kazuma staggered back a few steps when Natsume approached Mikan.
Mikan inhaled deeply when Natsume kissed her on the cheek. "I'm sorry for making you wait."
She turned red. "I-it's okay. It was an urgent call, right?"
Natsume nodded with a small smile.
She forgot how to breathe when she saw his smile for the first time.
"So…" Natsume turned to Kazuma and the girl who was gaping at Natsume openly. "Do you have any business with my girlfriend?"
"No," Kazuma blurted out before leaving them alone. He wouldn't admit that Natsume had scared the hell out of him.
After they left, Natsume grabbed Mikan's hand to leave the restaurant. When they reached his car, he opened the door for her as she obediently went inside. They stayed still in the car for a long moment.
Finally, Mikan let out a long sigh. "Arigatou, Natsume-san… He was my first crush and senpai when I was in middle school. I had always known that he would reject me no matter what, but…"
She didn't realize she was crying until she touched her face and found wet tears on her fingers. "I… I couldn't believe that I… I liked him. I—"
"He doesn't deserve your tears, Mikan."
She wasn't sure if he said those words to comfort her, but that was the last day she cried for her first crush.

...xXx...
Natsume stared at skillfully wrapped cookies before him. This morning, Mikan had come to his office just to give him this with a small white card.
I'm not an expert baker, but I hope you will like it.
Thank you for the other day.
—Mikan
He shook his head mentally. Mikan didn't know how many people had asked him if she was his girlfriend. Of course, he didn't tell them anything. One question would lead to another. So, it was better to let them think whatever they wanted. Suddenly, his cell phone vibrated. He looked at the caller ID before answering, "Hotaru."
"I heard from Mikan."
"…"
"Thank you."
Hearing his girlfriend for one year say 'Thank you' was weird. "Hn."
"Do you like Mikan?"
He had expected that question.
"You do."
"…"
"I'm getting married."
"I know…" he replied quietly while staring at the red invitation card. When he found Ruka's bride to be her, he finally understood why she kept dragging Mikan along on their date. He didn't know why she had to do that just to ensure his happiness. Was she trying to keep him in contact after they broke up? He wasn't sure and wished not to know the answer either.
"Friends?"
A sad smile crept up onto his face. "Friends."
"I hope you will come."
He knew she was referring to her wedding. "Hn."
"Goodbye."
He gave the same answer to officially end their single-year relationship.

...xXx...
He missed her. It was impossible, but he missed her. It had been a week since Mikan gave him her handmade cookies. He wanted to contact her but had no idea what he should say to make her agree to meet him again. The gods seemed to answer his silent prayer when his cell phone vibrated and the one who was calling him was none other than Mikan. He almost couldn't suppress the smile on his face. "Hello."
"Hello, Natsume-san. I'm sorry for calling so suddenly."
"It's okay." He sighed inaudibly as he was happy that he could at least hear her voice.
"A-ano…"
"Have lunch with me?" He didn't know where this sudden eagerness to see her came from.
"Yes!"
A real smile decorated his face after hearing her excitement.
"I'll pick you up in an hour," he said before ending their call. Even though today was Saturday, he had to go to work, but it was only half-day. He wondered where they should have their lunch while making his way out of the company.
In the end, they tried another café restaurant. He was the one who ordered the food. While waiting, she reminded him that tomorrow was his ex-girlfriend's wedding ceremony. She looked nervous when she approached the subject. He knew she was worried about him, or his feelings to be precise.
"I'm sorry… I know I shouldn't mention it, but I just wanted you to know that you have my attention if you wish to talk…" Her red face told him she was embarrassed.
"Will you go with me?"
A big smile appeared on her face. "I will!"
Seeing her smile, he knew he really liked her. Not to the point of loving her yet though. But, he was sure he would love her more than he loved Hotaru. He was truly grateful for meeting her. Thank you, Hotaru…

...xXx...
Her very being shook slightly when her bare arm made contact with his arm. His jacket was what separated their skin from touching. She was nervous but excited at the same time. The butterflies in her stomach were flapping madly.
"Are you alright?"
She blinked and looked at her partner. "Yes. I'm alright, Natsume-san."
The wedding was celebrated in western style, but Hotaru-san was to be dressed in a kimono for the evening. Even though Hotaru-san had forced her to be with Natsume-san, who was 23 years old, she was really happy for her cousin. She gazed at Natsume-san secretly. Every woman who saw him would definitely have difficulty taking their eyes off of him. To be honest, she felt slightly uncomfortable to be his partner today. Even though no one commented about her, she recognized the looks that were thrown at her. Well, she was just a girl in her first year of high school after all.
She slowly pulled away from his arm, but he stopped her. "Don't mind them."
He spared her a glance, and she let out a small laugh. "I can't help myself, Natsume-san."
"I chose you, didn't I?" He locked his gaze with hers.
Before she could lose herself in his crimson eyes, she averted her eyes. She didn't know what to say. Suddenly, she was unwillingly torn away from him by one of her cousins Anna-san.
"Come on, Hotaru is going to throw the bouquet!"
"For goodness' sake! I'm just a high school student, Anna-san!" Mikan tried to talk some sense to her cousin, but to her dismay, Anna-san seemed to ignore her and still dragged her to the gathering single women. Before Hotaru gave a signal, Mikan turned to Natsume, who was surprisingly looking at her. She didn't hear the screams from the women around her as she gazed back at him. When he smirked, their eye contact broke, and she turned around blushing. A gasp escaped her lips when the bouquet suddenly landed in her hands.
"You got the bouquet, Mikan!" Anna-san chirped in disbelief.
Mikan looked up and saw Hotaru-san's true smile. After returning her cousin's smile with a bright one, she made her way back to Natsume, who was watching her. When she was at his side, a smile was on her face as she said to him, "Can you believe this, Natsume-san?"
She flushed when he suddenly bent down to her.
"Call me Natsume from now on, Mikan," he whispered into her ear.
When he pulled away, she gazed at his face. She felt she was the luckiest woman in the universe. "I wonder whom I'm going to marry, Natsume."
He smirked. "You might find the answer sooner than you think."
She chuckled lightly. "I hope he's not a heavy smoker as I hate guys that smoke a lot."
He arched one eyebrow. "Are you saying that you hate me?"
She looked away from him and muttered, "Maybe."
When she heard him sigh, she gazed back at him.
"I will try to stop smoking then."
She didn't know where the courage came from when she hugged his arm. "I'm sure you can do it."
They continued to chat as if everyone else didn't exist, as if they were in their own world where no one but themselves could enter.
Thank you, Hotaru-san, she said mentally as she was truly grateful to her cousin. Without her, she wouldn't have had the chance to meet Natsume-san. Her guts were telling her that she would achieve happiness with him even though… even though she was just an involuntary third wheel.
The End
Thanks for reading.

I thought it was just for one more check. AHAHA. Thank you. ( : So, your cousin got married, and that was how you met your fiance? :D My beloved onee-chan, I love you! But you already know that. :3

My favorite line in this story:

    "Seduce him," Hotaru repeated nonchalantly.

When I first read it, my eyes bugged out. LOL. My mind almost stopped functioning. I was being like Mikan. "Hotaru...? Pardon me, I believe I misread." xD

I really love this fic. :D Yes, I do love unusual pairings. You know I like being different. xD The way Natsume scared Kazuma off was funny. Lol, fail at being manly. :3

Adoration The ending is so cute: how Natsume is willing to change for Mikan. Aah

8D My love has been conveyed. You didn't need to thank me since you're my beloved onee-chan. And plus, you also listened to me when I didn't have the courage to talk to anyone else. :3 But nevertheless, I shall accept your gratitude! xD *hugs*

  13. This was realllyyy good! It was interesting to see in the beginning that Natsume and Hotaru were together, and they actually loved each other, which was wierd. But it lead the way for Natsume and Mikan to be together!

  14. "Seduce him." was the funniest line in there, although there is nothing in the world that would make me seduce a man 7 years older than me that was dating my cousin O.O I probably can't talk since my crush in 9 years older.. But she's underage O.o He stopped smoking for her / I hate smokers _

  19. Awww.. Love is in the air! But I think you shouldve made Natsume 20 or 21 or something younger,. I mean, 7 years gap? But, on the bright side, some says " AGE DOESN'T MATTER! ". ;) Thumbs up for Involuntary Third Wheel ! :)

  20. It's weird, I know I've read this and yet I didn't review. Sorry...

Now this was an interesting story. I always say age doesn't matter and even though Mikan is pretty youn when compared to Natsume, it seems fine with me. I mean although they won't be doing much, that'll just have to wait when she turns 18, lol. Weird to see Hotaru with Natsume, though. Very crack pairing if I do say so myself. Still, it made for an eventful story. .

  25. Awe, this is so cute. I really like the summary, and this was pretty well written.
I felt like it was a little rushed, and the polite suffixes were kind of disturbing.
Otherwise, this was a good story. Good job.
