I Promise

#01: D.Gray-Man (Allen & Lenalee)
...xXx...
"What would you do if I told you that you'll have to kill someone you love when you become the 14th?"
Honestly, what would he do? He had no idea. After staring at the white piano for several moments, he sighed. A soft patting on his head made him look up to the side. Just one look let him know that Timcampy was comforting him. "Thank you, Timcampy…"
Tim rested on Allen's open palm to look at him properly.
Glancing down at the golden golem, he muttered, "Ne, Tim… If you were me, what would you do?"
Tim rested his wings weakly on his hand. Even though he was just a golem, he had always liked Allen. But, with his current state, he couldn't offer much help, and it frustrated him.
"I think I know what I should do, Tim…"
If Tim had head, he would have tilted his head to the side. Though Allen didn't elaborate, he would realise everything from his behaviour soon. On the outside, he may still act the same, but inside he gradually distanced himself from everyone. The one he avoided the most was Lenalee Lee.

...xXx...
"Did anyone see Allen-kun?" asked Lenalee to the crowd within the canteen.
Hearing Lenalee's voice, everyone paused to look at her before glancing at each other. After a while, they all shook their heads. They did not see Allen. In fact, they hadn't seen him for several days now. When they asked Jerry about it, he told them that Allen had come to the canteen but it would always be long before everyone woke up or long after everyone retired for the night.
For hours, she had been searching for Allen, but still, she couldn't find him. No one had seen him in the last few days. Komui-nii-san had told her that Allen was not on a mission, so he should be at Home. Allen had distanced himself from them since his meeting with the inspector. Something bad or maybe unpleasant must have happened during the meeting because Allen had never acted this way before. He might be a little shy, but he never distanced himself like this.
She stopped in her tracks and turned around. Allen's room, she might want to check it one more time before going anywhere else. The soft clicking sound of her short-heeled shoes echoed through the empty hall. Stopping right before Allen's room, she took a deep breath and knocked. Her ears met with silence, but when she heard sounds coming from the room, she opened her mouth. "Allen-kun, it's me, Lenalee. Will you please open the door?"
Again, she heard no answer from him, but a moment later, she heard footsteps behind the closed door. She smiled as she was happy that she finally found him. However, she didn't expect to see an emotionless expression on his face as the darkness of his room surrounded him.
"Do you need something, Lenalee?"
"Can I come in?"
He answered by leaving the door open for her while he went to sit on his bed with his back to her.
She closed the door and went to sit beside him. Before looking at the moon that provided some sort of light to his room, she snuck a glance at her silent partner.
"Do you need something, Lenalee?" he repeated and got up from bed to stand by the opened window.
She didn't like the sound of his voice. It was void of emotions, unlike the Allen she knew.
"What happened when you met the inspector, Allen-kun?"
She noticed how he became stiff and immediately knew her suspicions were right. "Please don't give me a white lie."
His stance visibly returned to normal, and upon turning to face her, he looked into her eyes and recited what his master had told him, "What would you do if I told you that you'll have to kill someone you love when you become the 14th?"
All of a sudden, she felt her blood turn cold. So, it was true that Allen could potentially turn into a traitor in the future. If anybody else told her, she wouldn't believe it, but hearing it from Allen himself, she… she didn't know what to feel at the moment.
Witnessing her pale face, he knew what was running in her mind. He had to make her leave. "Do you need something else, Lenalee? If not, please leave."
The word 'leave' seemed to wake her up from her wandering mind. She glared at him. Was this what he was trying to do, push them away? He was not going to chase her away, not this time or any other time. "If you think you can make me leave by frightening me, you're wrong, Allen-kun."
"Frightening you? I'm asking you politely to leave if you don't need anything else, Lenalee."
"I'm not leaving you, Allen-kun," she stated stubbornly.
Everything happened so fast that she didn't have enough time to react when Allen pinned her down on his bed. She suddenly felt so small even though she was older than Allen. Over the months, Allen had grown taller, and his face was not that of a child anymore. He looked more like a man now. Realizing how close they were, her face heated up, and her heart beat faster. Thankfully, he hadn't turned on the lights. Otherwise, she would have to explain her red face.
"Lenalee…"
The sound of his voice made her shudder. She froze when he touched her face with his red hand.
While tracing his ugly hand on her face, he slowly asked the woman he loved, "Don't you understand that I'm dangerous?"
"I'm not afraid of you," she replied immediately.
"I'm afraid for you, Lenalee…"
Her blush intensified when he gazed at her intensely.
"I promised that I would kill myself before the 14th successfully possessed me. But, I'm a human, Lenalee. I may be an exorcist, but I'm still a human. If I can't kill myself in time, I might kill everyone I love at Home, including Komui-san, Kanda, Lavi, Miranda, Krory… everyone… and most importantly, you, Lenalee."
She blinked when she felt something warm land on her cheek. Allen was crying.
"So please… please leave me alone, Lenalee. I won't be able to forgive myself if I hurt you. I would rather die alone than hurt the person I love the most."
Too shocked, she didn't know he had pushed her out of his room until the door was closed in her face. She wanted to force her way back into his room, but she suddenly stopped and asked herself, What would you say to him, Lenalee?
She stared at the door and blushed when she remembered his words.
"… I would rather die alone than hurt the person I love the most."
Allen-kun loves me? That can't be… Her blush deepened when she thought about Allen's smiling face, his laughter, his—
"Lenalee-chan!"
Lenalee twirled her head around to face Miranda, who was approaching her.
"Supervisor Komui is looking for you."
"Nii-san?"
Miranda smiled. "Yes. It looks like a new mission for you."
"Oh." Lenalee looked at Allen's door sadly.
"Lenalee-chan? Do you know where Allen-kun is?"
Just hearing his name was enough to make her flush red. "Why?"
Miranda wanted to ask what was wrong but decided against it. "Supervisor Komui said to call you and Allen-kun, but I couldn't find him."
Am I going on mission with Allen-kun? This will be my chance to talk to him. Lenalee smiled at Miranda. "Just right in time, I was looking for Allen-kun, too."
Before Miranda could reply her, Lenalee knocked the door before her again. "Allen-kun? Komui-nii-san is looking for both of us."
The door was opened and revealed Allen with a smile that didn't reach his grey eyes. What hurt her most was that Allen seemed to avoid looking at her.
"Miranda-san!"
Miranda smiled, oblivious to his fake cheerfulness. "Allen-kun, Supervisor Komui is looking for you and Lenalee."
"Right." He nodded and stepped out of his room immediately with Tim, who was nested on his white hair.
Looking at his back as he walked ahead with Miranda, Lenalee only stood there.
Miranda, who noticed Lenalee was not with them, half turned and asked, "Lenalee-chan?"
After faking a smile, she ran to them. "Coming!"

...xXx...
Is this the right thing to do? He kept asking himself. Knowing what was happening, he couldn't shut one eye and pretend everything was fine when it was far from it. Everyone at Home was aware that Allen was distancing himself from everyone because of the 14th. But still, he couldn't let his beautiful Lenalee go with the white-headed boy! Even though this was not the first time that they were assigned together, he couldn't, he just couldn't!
"Supervisor, can you please stop crying? It gives me the creeps," Reever stated bluntly.
"You're so mean, Section Chief Reever Komui whined like an elementary schooler.
"Supervisor, Allen and Lenalee are here," informed Johnny.
Reever sweat dropped when Komui instantly moved into his famous, serious pose.
Komui, who saw Allen's state, made up his mind and sent them both on a mission to retrieve the Innocence. He didn't like it, but he knew it was only his Lenalee who could pull the boy out of his silent misery. Remembering what General Cross said before his disappearance, he couldn't help but agree with the man; the 14th should have chosen some good-for-nothing as his host.

...xXx...
After obtaining the Innocence, they were spending a night in an inn before going back. She had been trying to talk to Allen, but they were not alone. Link always appeared out of nowhere whenever she tried to talk to him. The Black Order surely always kept an eye out of Allen. What he was feeling at the moment must be awful. Being watched 24/7 and suspected as a traitor. Suspected? He wasn't a suspect anymore since everyone learned about what General Cross revealed about the 14th, who had chosen Allen as his host. Everyone was afraid of him now.
Staring at the ceiling for a while, she finally gave up the thought to go to sleep. Suddenly, she had the urge to see Allen even though she was a little afraid of him. If he pushed her away again, she would fight back. Getting up from bed, she silently made her way to Allen's room, which was next to hers.
Link was nowhere to be found when she walked into Allen's room, and she was grateful for that. Allen looked tranquil while sleeping. Well, everyone would when you were exempt from payment of duty. Trying to be as quiet as possible, she crawled into his bed. Satisfied that he didn't wake up, she snuggled closer to his form. The heat from his body calmed her mind instantly. However, she froze when Allen turned to her side. Her eyes widened when he opened his grey eyes.
"What are you doing, Lenalee?" He kept his voice down as he looked at Lenalee.
Instead of answering his question, she closed her eyes to calm her fast, beating heart and moved closer to him.
Silence ensued.
"Aren't you afraid of me, Lenalee? I might turn into the 14th at any moment and hurt you."
He said those words while tracing her bare arm with finger that made her shiver. Even though she was afraid of him, she couldn't and wouldn't leave him alone.
"Am I not the person you love the most, Allen?" She had stopped calling him 'Allen-kun' so that he would know she was serious.
He wanted to lie and take back what he said the other day, but he knew he couldn't, not anymore. "You are."
"Then don't leave me. I wouldn't be able to bear it, Allen. I couldn't bear the thought of being away with the person I love the most." The moment she uttered those words was the moment she finally understood that she truly loved Allen. If it was Kanda or Lavi, she was sure she wouldn't go this far to keep them with her. Aside from Komui-nii-san, Allen had become the biggest part of her heart.
"Are you sure about this, Lenalee?"
She knew what he was trying to say. He wouldn't let her go if she was sure. "You're not the only one who is so sure about this, Allen."
A sigh of contentment escaped her lips when Allen draped his arm around her waist and pulled her closer.
"Thank you, Lenalee…" he whispered into her ear.
"Promise me that you won't leave me again."
She could feel his smile against her ear as he answered, "I promise."
The End
Thanks for reading.
