Friendship: Chapter 2

#01: Detective Conan (Shin'ichi/Conan & Shiho/Ai)
...xXx...
If looks could kill, she would be dead by now. Ai wasn't sure why Kudō had been trying to burn a hole into her back since this morning. She started contemplating if it had something to do with her joke the other day with a mental shake of her head, she pushed the thought to the back of her head. As the last bell of the day rang, she hastily packed her books and left immediately, not even bothering saying a word of goodbye to her little friends.
Conan kept his gaze on Haibara's leaving figure until Mitsuhiko's voice reached his ears.
"Conan-kun, what did you do to Haibara-san?" His voice was full of accusation.
Conan sighed mentally. He had always been the one to blame if something was wrong with Haibara. Arguing with his little group of friends wouldn't do any good for him, so he remained silent and packed his things quickly with a scowl on his face. Ai could fool anyone but him, a real detective. They both knew that she left because of him. Could she really blame him? No, she couldn't! He knew it was just a joke, but it hit him right to the core of his heart. What he really wanted to know was the truth. If she truly desired to be a normal Ai, would she really think of spending her life with him… forever?
"Conan-kun?" Ayumi's concerned voice brought him back to the Earth.
"I did nothing."
With that said, he left them.
They would have followed him, but somehow, they were held back by his cold blue eyes. Conan and Ai were not like them; they all knew that. It seemed that they belonged to another world that no one but themselves could understand, and both of them often spoke of things that no one else knew about.

...xXx...
While holding the phone, Professor Agasa waited for Ran to answer his request.
"Conan is spending the weekend at your place, Professor Agasa?"
"Yes, Ran-kun. I just finished a software game last night, and Conan-kun would like to try it out," he replied while looking at Conan, who was reading one of Mitsuhiko-kun's mangas.
"Well, I guess it can't be helped then. Thank you, Professor Agasa."
After Professor Agasa ended the call, he looked at the younger Shin'ichi. "What are you planning, Shin'ichi?"
The four-eyed child looked up from his manga. "Why?"
Professor Agasa only stared at him in response.
Conan sighed and closed the manga with a soft thump. "I just wanted to talk to Haibara."
"About what?"
Conan remained still for a moment before replying, "I'm not sure."
That was rare, thought Professor Agasa, but he didn't push the matter further either. The young detective had been through a lot when Ran-kun lost her memory after witnessing Officer Satō being shot before her eyes. They were lucky that Shin'ichi could quickly discover who the true murderer was.
"I'm going to use the phone," Conan said, and without waiting for Professor Agasa's answer, he picked up the phone and pressed a set of numbers. While waiting for the other side to answer his call, he made his way out of anyone's earshot. When he heard a feminine's voice through the phone, he said, "Okaa-san."
"Shin-chan! What is it? Have you decided to live with us here?"
Before he could reply, his mother had already yelled for his father, telling him that their son was coming when it was far from it. He sighed audibly. "Okaa-san, please. I need to talk to you about something."
A pause.
"What is it? If it's about a case, you should ask your father."
He refrained himself from sighing again. "Okaa-san, I want to talk to you."
"Oh… Alright. Is it about Ran-chan?"
A vein popped on his forehead. "Okaa-san!"
"Alright, alright, I'm sorry."
"…"
"Shin-chan?"
He closed his eyes. "I don't know where to start."
"What is it?"
"Okaa-san…" When he heard a short humming, he continued, "Will you joke around about spending your life forever with someone you hate?"
He almost thought his mother was not there as he didn't hear anything. "Okaa-san?"
"Who is she, Shin-chan?"
After debating with himself for a moment, he finally told his mother, "… Haibara."
"Ah, the girl who is from the Black Organization."
"Was," he corrected defiantly.
"Do you like her, Shin-chan?"
He was flabbergasted. "W-what?"
"If you don't like her, her joke wouldn't be so important to you."
"But—"
"By the way, did she ever tell you that she hates you?"
No, he replied mentally. Haibara never mentioned anything about hating him, and he was just assuming since he realised that he was the only one who could upset her. But then, why should she be upset with him? Did she take his words seriously? Could it be that… they liked each other?
"Shin-chan?"
"I like her." It was just a whisper, but his mother heard him nonetheless.
"Thank you, Okaa-san." A smile was on his face before he ended the call and made his way to Haibara's room.

...xXx...
Yukiko pouted at the phone. "I want to go back to Japan immediately."
"Did something happen to Shin'ichi?" Yūsaku asked with a surprised and worried face.
"Shin-chan is starting to like a girl that I know nothing about."
Yūsaku sighed. "You should let him be."
"But—"
"That child will introduce her to us when he's ready."
"But I'm still curious about this Haibara girl who is—was from the Black Organization."
The last words piqued Yūsaku's interest. "What did you say?"
"The girl who was from the Black Organization."
"Hm…" Yūsaku gave a thoughtful look before smiling. "You should still let him be."
"What about we travel around the world?" he suggested, trying to draw his wife's attention to somewhere else.
"Ara! That's a good idea! I'll start packing now!"
Yūsaku shook his head as he watched his wife skip away to their room.

...xXx...
Conan frowned as he knocked the door before him one more time when he received no answer. Is she taking a nap?
He carefully turned the doorknob and found that the door unlocked. The room was, as expected, dimly lighted. Haibara's tired figure could be seen before the still-running monitor, and it seemed like she fell asleep at her desk.
"Haibara?" he called softly when he was at her side. "Haibara, wake up. You should go to your bed."
When there was no indication she would wake up, he gulped before trying again, "Shiho."
That name seemed to jerk her up from whatever dream she was having, and he felt kind of bad for ruining her sleep.
"Kudō-kun," she acknowledged and looked away from him to rub her sleepy eyes before turning to him again. "What are you doing here?"
"I didn't mean to interrupt you, just wanted to talk, but you are tired. You should go to bed and rest."
She shook her head before looking at her computer again. "I'm fine."
Before she could touch the keyboard, he grabbed her wrist, pulling her to her bed.
"Kudō-kun, I'm not a child anymore even though I appear as one." She wanted to tell him off, but her tired voice betrayed her. It couldn't be helped as she had been working on the drug until morning. Lack of sleep and thinking about how Kudō had been staring at her this morning were taking a heavy toll on her.
"I know you've been working hard on the drug, but I want you to take care of your health, too, Haibara."
Too tired to argue, she just let herself fall onto the bed and closed her eyes. Remembering what he said, she muttered, "What did you want to talk about, Kudō-kun?"
A long silence.
"I like you, Shiho Miyano." His voice was above a whisper.
Even though she was barely conscious, she still replied with a whisper, "I like you, too, Shin'ichi Kudō."

...xXx...
During dinner, Professor Agasa noticed an incredible improvement between the young detective and the young scientist. As curious as he was, he couldn't ask what had happened when Shin'ichi went to Ai-kun's room as it was none of his business.
"Watch them for me, Professor Agasa."
That was Yūsaku Kudō's message from just a while ago which left him curious of why he would leave such a message, but now, he understood. This kind of topic might have been too old for him, but he knew something was growing between the two as they were on first name basis now. He still felt weird picturing Shin'ichi and Ai-kun together, but he could not deny the fact that they would be good for each other as both were not ordinary elementary schoolers. Seeing something more than friendship between them made him smile inwardly.

I like it when Conan tells off the Detective Boys... Yes, that was not particularly part of the AiCon, but I still enjoyed that part! XD
