Last Chance: Chapter 7

#33: Gakuen Alice (Natsume & Mikan)
...xXx...
Natsume curiously eyed Mikan, who was enjoying the setting sun. Since he had finished his work for the day, he went downstairs to join her in his front yard. Sitting down beside her, he watched her lie down on the grass with her arms stretched out. A small smile lit on his lips before he gazed at the red-orange sky. A cool but gentle breeze accompanied them.
"Ask away," she said suddenly.
He was startled as he didn't know how she knew he wanted to ask her something. The question was at the tip of his tongue, but he just couldn't get it out. Well, maybe he could, but he was afraid of her reaction. Honestly, he felt like a fool for being a coward. In any case, did he even have the right to ask her that? He didn't.
"Natsume…?"
"It's nothing," he muttered quietly.
A comfortable silence ensued.
"You want to know about me." It was a statement rather than a question.
Before he could stop himself, he grunted, "Hn."
Feeling her hand on top of his, he looked down at her.
"What do you want to know?" she urged.
Heaving a soft sigh, he stated, "Affection. Where did you get it from before you met me…?"
Mikan blinked in surprise as she hadn't expected him to ask her that question. She hummed to herself before replying, "Well, I always get them from the most pure sources, of course. Compared to grown humans, children's affection is the best to sate my hunger since their minds are not tainted yet."
"Tainted…" he muttered to himself.
She seemed to know where his mind was heading, so she quickly added, "I didn't mean that a grown human like you is tainted, Natsume. An angel can obtain affection from any human, but if the human has impure intentions, it will be meaningless for us."
"Hnn…"
"…"
"Yesterday… what was actually happened?"
She looked at him incredulously. "Did you forget what I told you on the first day I came here?"
He glared at her. "I'm not that old to easily forget what you said. I just want to know what you're protecting me from."
"Out of topic," she replied and looked away from him. "You will know the answer to that question soon enough, Natsume."
Annoyance radiated from his being before he gave up and saved his breath. There was no use in arguing with Mikan. "So… what do you eat?"
"Actually, we never feel hungry when we're in our own land. We recover just fine by sleeping."
So handy, he commented inwardly.
Mikan pulled herself up and gazed at his handsome face. "Natsume…"
He turned to her with questioning eyes.
"Are… are you alright?" she asked hesitantly. Really, she didn't want to remind him about his ex-wife, but she really wanted to make sure he was alright. Knowing Natsume, he would keep everything to himself. You would want to share your experiences, be they happy or sad, with someone who understands you. She knew this more than anyone else.
A small, sad smile appeared on his lips. "It will happen sooner or later."
She tightened her hold on his hand in response.
"I feel so tired," he breathed out.
Tugging his hand slightly, she patted her lap and urged him to lie down. And just like that, Natsume took what she offered to him. A contented sigh escaped his lips as he laid his head down in her lap. His heart felt lighter, especially when Mikan ran her fingers through his hair in soothing manner.
"Sleep, Natsume…"
The way she uttered those words reminded him of the first night they met.
"I'll always watch over you…"
Her voice sounded so sincere that sleep took over his tired mind easily.
After making sure Natsume was asleep, she gazed up at Akira, who had arrived without a fuss.
Akira watched his twin sister with love before pressing his forehead to hers and transferring some of the affection he had gotten for her. As twins, he knew she was in trouble yesterday. Yet, she refused to get his help even though he wouldn't be able to help her. Life and death were different matters, after all. After he pulled away, he gazed at her. "Better?"
"Much better." She nodded. "Thank you, Akira."
He took a seat beside her while glancing at his sister's charge. This human named Natsume was lucky to have his sister's attention, but the human would have his wrath if he dared to hurt Mikan. His eyes shifted to Mikan, who leaned against his arm with closed eyes.
"Thank you for coming, Akira," she muttered softly.
"I'll always come to see you, Mikan. No matter what happens," he replied just as softly.
Both knew what he was talking about. A grateful smile settled on her face as she felt blessed for having Akira as her twin brother. I'll give my best, Akira.
