XXX: Chapter 3

#02: Detective Conan (Shin'ichi/Conan & Shiho/Ai)
...xXx...
"Ayumi-chan..." Mitsuhiko called out hesitantly.
Ayumi turned her sad, but determined, eyes towards him. "Mitsuhiko-kun, didn't I tell you that we shouldn't give up?"
Before Mitsuhiko could open his mouth, she continued, "Do you really want to let Haibara-san go? Don't you want to be with her?"
The boy remained quiet for a while before answering, "I don't want to let her go, but Haibara-san looks so happy. People say that when you truly like someone, if they don't return your feelings, you should let them go. Otherwise, you're going to make them miserable. If... if Conan-kun can make Haibara-san happy, then I will let her go willingly. Besides, we all can still be friends. As long as we apologise to them, that is."
Ayumi's shoulders slumped, and tears started gathering in her eyes. "But..."
On the day they saw Conan and Ai kiss, they had left the pair alone, but still, she didn't want to give up, so she tried to trap Conan. The plan was to make Ai see her kissing Conan so that she would leave him. Mitsuhiko had successfully lured Conan away from Ai. It was then she appeared and blocked his way out while Mitsuhiko brought Ai along to see them both.
Unfortunately, Conan seemed to know her plan when she kept leaning down to him. Instead of his lips, her lips met with his palm, and that was how Ai found them. Never had she felt so scared of her life until she looked at Ai. Since they had known each other, Ai had never shown such anger in her eyes. Even until now, she could hear her cold voice that made her shake in fear.
"I don't know you would go this far just to steal someone else's boyfriend, Yoshida-san."
Afterwards, Conan and Ai left them alone. She still remembered how Conan looked at her and Mitsuhiko with disappointment. They had not been acting like good friends. True friends wouldn't hurt another friend just to get whatever they wanted. They should have supported Conan and Ai.
Head bowed down in shame, she brokenly whispered, "What have I done?"
She felt a hand on her shoulder and looked up with tears streaming down her face.
Mitsuhiko smiled down at her and wiped her tears away. "Ayumi-chan, even though they might not forgive us, I think we still have to apologise to them. Don't you agree?"

Just to remind you that today is THE day. XXX
Ran felt her face burn when she read this. Ai had come to the agency earlier and left a small piece of folded paper for Conan, who already went out with her father. She didn't mean to read the small note, but she was curious. Honestly, she didn't think grade-schoolers like them would understand the meaning of XXX. Though, she was confused at what day Ai was referring to. Her father's voice snapped her back from her wandering mind and folded the paper immediately.
With a cheery smile, she greeted them both, "Welcome home, Otou-san, Conan-kun."
After receiving their replies, she approached Conan, who just sat down on the couch with a thoughtful look. "Ne, Conan-kun..."
He looked up. "Yes, Ran-nee-chan?"
"Have you heard anything about Shin'ichi lately?"
"Shin'ichi-nii-chan?"
"Yes, I haven't heard anything from him for a month now, so I'm a bit worried."
Conan shook his head. "No, I haven't." I'm sorry, Ran.
Ran sighed in defeat. "Oh..."
"What's that?" He pointed at the piece of paper in her hand.
Her expression brightened. "Oh! Not long after you left with Otou-san, Ai-chan came and asked me to give this to you."
"Thank you." He took and read it immediately with a smile on his lips. However, but his smile was quickly replaced with a frown. He glanced at his wristwatch before realisation dawned on him. Eyes widened, he cursed, "Crap."
Ran let herself smile as she saw Conan run to his room in a hurry. She followed after him. "Going somewhere?"
Conan whirled around before continuing to pack. "I'm sorry, Ran-nee-chan. I forgot to tell you that I'm going to spend the week at Professor Agasa's place."
"Oh?"
"Yeah, there's a new game that Professor wants me to try out and after that, I'm leaving with my mother for a short vacation."
"I see. Where are you going?"
"Not sure yet."
"Well, we will see you next week then?"
Conan nodded and zipped his small duffle bag. "Yes. Until then, Ran-nee-chan!"
Ran didn't get the chance to reply as he had already left.
"Where's he going?"
She turned to her father. "Professor Agasa's."
Mouri huffed before saying that the boy should stay there forever. After hearing a meaningful Otou-san from his daughter, he shut his mouth and asked for dinner instead.

...xXx...
A hand shook his shoulder. "Shin-chan, wake up! Shin-chan!"
With a gruff grumble, he sat up sleepily before staring at his mother's smiling face.
"Come on, sleepy head. Didn't you promise Shiho that you would show her around? Breakfast is ready, so be sure to hurry up."
Blinking away the sleep, he nodded and got up to get ready. Currently, his family and Shiho were in the vacation house at Karuizawa. It was his mother's idea to have family time with Shiho. He knew his mother did this after finding out that his girlfriend had no other relatives. It seemed that his mother wanted to know more about Shiho. So far, from what he saw, they were getting along just fine.
As soon as he was done, he entered the kitchen. His father was reading a newspaper while his mother and Shiho talked about the latest fashion, something he didn't care about. After the usual pleasantries and breakfast, he left the house with Shiho, holding hands.
"Did you sleep well last night?"
Ai smiled. "Yes."
"Good." He nodded. They both truly needed a break from their little friends. Both Mitsuhiko and Ayumi did apologise to them for their interference, but their relationship had become a bit awkward. He knew that it would take time for them to accept his relationship with Shiho. The good thing was they wouldn't try to interfere with their relationship anymore.
"Ran asked me about my whereabouts."
"What are you going to do?"
He shrugged. "Lost contact plan sounds pretty good for me."
It was difficult to tell Ran that she should stop waiting for him, so he used his gradual absence of calling her to break the contact slowly. It would take time, but it would be less painful for her. Besides, he did leave a hint here and there that he met someone as well. He glanced at Shiho, who enjoyed the scenery around them.
Feeling his eyes on her, she gazed at him. "What?"
He shook his head but squeezed her hand a bit. "Just remembering."
"About my message?"
Surprise was written all over his face.
Shiho chuckled. "Who knew that my message would bring us together now?"
"Yeah..." he muttered before asking, "Are you happy, Shiho?"
She looked at him with a smile. "I am."
The rest of their walk was spent in companionable silence. Both didn't know what the future would hold, but they were quite content now. No matter what happened, they would support one another until the end.
The End
Thanks for reading.
